Trauma-Informed Therapist

The focus of this very important web page is “Trauma Therapy” What does it mean to be a “Trauma Informed Therapist?” As an abuse and Trauma Survivor it has taken me many years to finally heal.

Meanwhile, I consider myself very resourceful. It has been invaluable to me learning the top techniques in the trauma field. To be able to find a way to decrease symptoms of hyper-vigilance and being triggered by traumatic memories from the past has also helped me immensely.

Trauma Work- Journey

It’s a life long journey. Many times, even people closest to me have not had an understanding as to why I simply can’t “snap out of it”. They unfortunately don’t understand why I have continued to be triggered for example by loud noises and rude or angry people.

Treating “Complex PTSD”

My name is Mateja Petje and I’m a “Trauma Informed Therapist.” I specialize in treating Complex PTSD (“Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”). Complex PTSD is often times caused by childhood abuse, neglect & traumatic events usually in early childhood. This section of my website called “Mateja Petje Trauma Work” is dedicated to you. Please read this section carefully.

Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous.” Pete Walker, M.A., MFT

Complex PTSD in children

The reason Complex PTSD occurs in children is because children are not yet able to develop a secure attachment with their parents or caregivers. This inability to develop attachment is also known as an Attachment or Developmental Disorder.

However, I do not work with any acute or recent trauma cases. Additionally, I also do not work with war veterans or Traumatic Brain Injury Also called: TBI or Craniocerebral Trauma. In cases where my clients are not making progress, I refer clients out to EMDR trained therapists.

EMDR is currently the most researched and evidence based approach but it does not always work in my experience when it comes to complex trauma.

Mateja Petje Trauma Work- Trauma Triggers

What are Trauma Triggers?

Very simply this reminds me of being abused by my mother and of being in several abusive relationships. One of the reasons the very idea of Mateja Petje Trauma Work even exists is because of my past experiences on a personal level. It is vital to keep in mind several things with respect to triggered trauma. First, is that traumatic memories remain locked & hidden away in our body. This is why traditional “talk” therapy is just not enough. Bessel van der Kolk describes this process in his book “Body Keeps the Score.”

Under “normal” circumstances, the brain is able to process the emotions associated with an upsetting event. However, in the case of trauma, there might be fragmented pieces of memory. In many instances, especially if traumatic events were intense and happened early in life, the memories might be repressed. Therefore no memories exist, at least not on a conscious level.

Mateja Petje Trauma Work- Memories

Memories are stored on subconscious level and that’s why in my work I help my clients understand the root causes of anxiety, depression, and panic attacks by utilizing techniques such as hypnosis and NLP, Psych-K and mental rehearsal and changing subconscious programming. This again, is the essence of “Mateja Petje Trauma Work.”.

However, the body keeps the memories and when we experience a trigger, such as noise, the body reacts with a “flight or fight response”. That serves as a protection from danger that might not be truly present. You see the brain perceives this as “this is happening right now”! It does not distinguish the past from the present.

Mateja Petje Trauma Work- New Approach

This “reaction” is what we call “emotional flashbacks”. We might react with increased heart rate, sweating, muscle tension, shallow breathing, and muscle tension. When left untreated, people develop mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.

Therefore, in order to heal our bodies and our minds, we need to adopt approaches, that not only focus on the mind & mental aspects, but also detox toxic or negative emotions from our bodies that might have been repressed. This is the essence of Mateja Petje Trauma Work. You can begin to see why “talk therapy” has its limits. These techniques enable you to get to the root of why things are as they are.
