Mateja Petje PTSD Diagnosis

With so many war veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as above than average incidents of shootings, and specifically the recent shooting close to my home, in Parkland, Fl, I decided to write this article. In order to bring some clarity as to what PTSD is and also to offer some suggestions as to how it can be treated.

Understand that there is no one correct treatment. I base this conclusion on my personal experience of having suffered significant trauma which was a result of all types of abuse during my childhood and adolescence and even later on in my adult life. For example I have experienced trauma related to being in abusive relationships. Frankly I had experienced nightmares and some flashbacks for as long as I remember.

Mateja Petje PTSD Diagnosis – Seeking help

Remember the information in this blog should serve as a guideline. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend that if you feel that you suffer from PTSD that you consult a licensed clinician or a psychologist.

Now let’s first take a look as to how the psychology field defines PTSD.

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association revised the PTSD diagnostic criteria in the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; 1). PTSD is included in a new category in DSM-5, Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders. Full copyrighted criteria are available from the American Psychiatric Association (1). Here I am just listing a few.

Mateja Petje PTSD Diagnosis – Seeking help (cont.)

To be diagnosed with PTSD, the person was exposed to: death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence, or similar, including any kind of abuse or domestic violence, experiencing it directly or indirectly by observing it.

Typical symptoms include: nightmares, flashbacks, emotional distress, and intrusive thoughts.

For example, for years following the abuse, I would have continued nightmares and I also developed sensitivity to criticism and aversion to anybody talking loudly. I would experience physical sensations, such as vomiting or upset stomach. Basically, I developed a trigger and in this case it was a loud voice.

Mateja Petje Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Boca Raton Delray Boynton Deerfield Palm Beach Holistic Psychotherapist PTSD Trauma Anxiety Depression Tapping Stress

Another example, would be in the case of people that were exposed to violence. This would include shootings and guns, where they develop emotional distress with ANY loud noises that resemble a gun shot. It can take years to heal and to not experience emotional distress when the trigger presents itself.

For a person to meet the criteria for PTSD, the symptoms need to last at least a month and they also experience distress and functional impairment in several key areas of life such as social and occupational.

Mateja Petje PTSD Diagnosis & Treatment

So what can we do about it?

1.  Most of all know that you are not alone! What helped me most is to seek support of friends who normalized my feelings. In addition that what I was experiencing was not the norm. My boyfriend’s family was nothing like my own where I experienced joy and laughter. Not abuse and tension which was the norm in my family when I was an adolescent.

2.  I also worked with several therapists, coaches, and healers. This was where I learned how to identify my triggers and how to manage my emotions and “rewrite my story”. One approach that was helpful with a pervasive memory of being severely beaten was finding a therapist that was trained in EMDR. After a few sessions I was able to tell my story without crying and I was able to emotionally detach from the incident.

Mateja Petje Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Boca Raton Delray Boynton Deerfield Palm Beach Holistic Psychotherapist PTSD Trauma Anxiety Depression Tapping Stress

However, the approach that finally started to help me in stopping intrusive and limiting thoughts and beliefs is when I learned and received training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). In essence, this approach focuses on the linguistic and how we store and process memories.

I have been able to start understanding that my negative programming was due to being exposed to abuse and trauma that colored my world. See I saw the world as a threat and subconsciously sought experiences and people that confirmed that my world was not a safe place and that people cannot be trusted. Only when I started changing my beliefs did my life and my well-being begin to improve.

Mateja Petje PTSD Diagnosis & Treatment (cont)

3.    Join a support groupOther people who have gone through similar experiences can not only offer validation but you will also feel understood. Not many people (including some therapists) really understood why I was not able to get better. This is in spite of years of therapy and medication. Medication can be helpful in the initial stages, but key is to understand the root causes and how your beliefs and thoughts contribute to the disorder.

4.     Do journaling. When we are overwhelmed with thoughts it’s key that we find healthy ways to manage them and get them out of our head.

5.     Learn stress management and breathing techniques. I think meditation literally saved my life. I studied different modalities including mindfulness, zen, guided meditation and meditation based on mantra. See the Art of Living Foundation. I was able to heal insomnia and significantly reduce anxiety and depression symptoms.

Mateja Petje Mothers Day

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day

MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS – INFLUENCES FOR A LIFETIME

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day insights, experiences and lessons learned. Mothers play a big part in our lives, especially when it comes to their daughters. In an ideal world, daughters receive love, attention, support, and wisdom from their moms so that they can go into the world and follow their dreams and passions.

Mateja Petje Mothers Day Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

According to recent research as discussed in the article in Psychology Today Here is a link http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200104/the-mother-daughter-bond Most adults report positive relationships with their mothers. For example, 88 percent of adults say their mother has had a positive influence on them, and 92 percent say their current relationship with their mother is positive.

Mateja Petje Mothers Day Boca Raton Slovenia Ljubljana Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Management Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Depressed Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management

Still, in my clinical practice, these numbers tend to be quite different. Many women, young or old, report having strained relationships with their mothers. Quite often, they suffer from low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and unfulfilled relationships. They blame themselves not knowing what went wrong and why they cannot form a lasting loving relationship with a man. Many times they did not have a good role model as to what constitutes a healthy and loving relationship or a marriage.

So the bond between mothers and daughters is very complex. The bond starts to already develop during pregnancy. Research shows that even fetuses can identify when their mom is stressed and therefore stress can indirectly affect the child’s emotional blue-print.

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day – Attending Miami University

When I was pursuing my master’s degree at the University of Miami, I wrote my best essay on the importance of a secure attachment with parents, and especially mothers. Those who are lucky  enough get this kind of secure attachment however many others who are not so lucky suffer due to insecure and avoidance attachment. This is characterized by fear, anxiety and feelings of abandonment.

Unfortunately, my experience was similar to many other daughters growing up in dysfunctional families. My family on my mother’s side has experienced generations of alcoholism and violence. Men tend to be violent and use alcohol as a coping mechanism. Many times this was an escape from mental and emotional illnesses, including PTSD which my grandfather suffered from and in the end it cost him his life.

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day – Coming to America

My mom was not an alcoholic, however she never healed from her own trauma. Instead she lashed out. In my tender teen years, I was abused physically, emotionally and mentally. She never sought help.  This was just not what you did. Seeking help for emotional and mental issues is still stigmatized even to this day.

I had to physically move across the ocean from Slovenia to the US to finally heal from my own trauma. I am the first in my family who broke the cycle and decided I didn’t want to live this kind of life moreover that I deserve a loving relationship. In therapy I learned a lot about myself and why I developed clinical depression. My healing journey was long and it’s still an ongoing process.

At the same time, it was also a blessing in disguise as I have been able to help hundreds of women to heal from abuse, trauma, difficult relationships, low self-esteem and the lack of self-love. The women I’ve worked with now have confidence, improved relationships and they have made peace with the past.

Here are some suggestions how to heal and improve your relationship with your mother:

1.    Forgive your mom and let go. Write a letter to your mom expressing everything and then burn it. You are doing this for your sake so that you don’t carry this burden.

2.    Think about all the good stuff. Don’t always dwell on the bad stuff. One of my fondest memories is when my mom brought me breakfast in bed on Saturdays.

3.    Be your own best parent. Think about what you have always needed from your mom but never got it. Pamper yourself.

4.    Remember that your mom is just doing the best that she can. She learned all she knows from her mother.

5.    When your mom starts with her “usual” nagging, or she is being negative or critical, just gently disengage. Set the boundaries and practice “tough love.”

Thank you for reading!

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day best wishes!

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships

10 SIGNS YOU’RE IN AN UNHEALTHY OR TOXIC RELATIONSHIP

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships-Prince Charming

Mateja Petje says unhealthy relationships mean for many of us, especially women, growing up in traditional Western cultures that we have a particular belief system. Most have been taught to believe that one day we will meet Prince Charming who will ride in on a white horse and save us from all our suffering and make us happy and whole again. This theme is very pervasive in Western culture including in our books and movies where it permeates everything.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships-Jerry McGuire & Pretty Woman

Think about movies such as Jerry McGuire (“You complete me”) or another great example is the movie “Pretty Woman”. In the past women didn’t have as many career choices that we have today, so often times they just had to be “happy” and put up with whatever life brought them.

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships-Emotional, mental, financial & physical abuse

That meant women would suffer emotional, mental, financial, and even physical abuse. Luckily, with women’s rights and movement up the career ladder things have changed for women yet on an emotional level we still expect for a man to “make us happy”. This is the core of our misconception.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Ljubljana Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Management Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships -True for both genders

You might be a stay at home mom or dad or a professional or business owner, the issue remains the same. We all want love, understanding, and a shoulder to cry on. We have all read enough self help books, or even spent years in therapy, yet we are not getting the results.  And this goes for both men and women alike. Nowadays it’s not uncommon anymore for a woman to have a demanding career, while her husband stays home or works in a less demanding job. What I’m saying here is true for both genders.

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships- Discussing suffering & abuse

Men usually just don’t share their suffering or even abuse from a spouse due to the stigma attached to it. This is a very difficult situation in terms of healing and moving forward. The fact that men are usually very closed off generally speaking works against the situation many times.

I have had my own share of failed relationships that stemmed from my own traumatic and dysfunctional childhood. I started dating when I was 15 because I thought this was the only way for me to feel loved and understood. Yet, because I never healed sufficiently, I kept attracting abusive, angry, and narcissistic men. I wonder if this rings a bell for you.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships-Perception

Many of the clients I’ve worked with in my clinical practice have had similar struggles in relationships that have also led to clinical depression, anxiety and lack of self worth. There is a pressure within our society to find that one special man or woman who is your soulmate, otherwise you might be perceived that there is something wrong with you.

Self help books “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”

Probably like most of you, I’ve read a ton of self-help books, including Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and saw healers, coaches and therapists. I’ve learned a lot about myself and relationships which also led me to become a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

Mateja Petje Imago Approach

In my professional practice I utilize something called the Imago Approach, a concept founded by Harville and Helen Hendrix. You can find several books which you might find helpful on my website www.NaturalStressManagement.com.

According to this theory, we attract partners in our life that remind us about our primary caregivers, who are generally our parents, and that includes both for their positive and negative traits. To give you an example, a woman who grew up in a home where her mother was very submissive, might find herself attracting domineering and controlling men like her father.

Mateja Petje Your subconscious and unconscious mind

However, don’t despair because with some professional help this CAN be overcome. The best approach that worked for me and my clients is to understand how your subconscious and unconscious mind works. Many times, when we grew up in a dysfunctional home, we made certain beliefs about love, relationships, feelings, money and so on. We might not even remember these beliefs yet we keep living our lives based on those beliefs.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

Mateja Petje Utilizing NLP, Hypnosis & EMDR

If we want a different life, the key is to understand your mindset and your beliefs. Many times you’ll find you’re still living your life based on your parents or other authority figures beliefs. As children, we depended on others for our survival and our well being so we were not able to question those beliefs, consequently as ADULTS we can, and we MUST in order to change our lives for the better.

Over time I’ve found the techniques that work best in uncovering hidden beliefs include NLP, hypnosis, and EMDR. You can find more about them by going to my website www.NaturalStressManagement.com

Mateja Petje -How do you know?

Now, let’s talk some more about HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE IN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP or even TOXIC relationship. I want you to ask yourself if any of these statements apply to you. By the way, an excellent book I often refer to is by Doreen Virtue, Assertiveness for Earth Angels. Some of these behaviors are more call for an improvement, while others could be too toxic and you might need to leave the relationship.

Mateja Petje -Top 10 relationship deal breakers!

It’s important to know what your DEAL BREAKERS are and what you can tolerate, however there are some that deserve our attention and I am just mentioning a few common ones that can destroy even a happy relationship.

  • 1. Interrupting – the person who continuously interrupts you is not interested in what you have to say. Very often, the person who constantly interrupts is frequently anxious or hyperactive (and that might be due to use of stimulants, such as coffee). You need to tell them something like: “Excuse me, I am not done talking yet” and be assertive.
  • 2. Constant correcting – this is even worse than interrupting. You constantly walk on eggshells. You need to be assertive and tell them that it feels more  like he or she is acting as your teacher and not your partner.
  • 3. Clingy/needy behavior. Again you need to tell them you are busy with projects and set proper boundaries.
  • 4. Stalking is even worse and in some cases you might need to get a restraining order if situation doesn’t improve.
  • 5. Guilt-tripping or manipulating people. You feel resentful and angry. It’s important to say NO and stick to it.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

Mateja Petje -Top 10 relationship deal breakers! (continued)

  • 6. Angerholics are addicted to being angry. This anger might be a result of upbringing, or also deep feelings of inferiority, disguised as anger. It’s important to get a professional help especially if the angry person continues to be in denial and doesn’t respond to common sense.
  • 7. Controlling behavior where typically controlling people act out immaturely or with anger when they feel that they are not in control.
  • 8. Addictions, including substance abuse reminds us it’s important to understand that any addiction needs to be treated by a professional. If you find yourself always pleading with the person suffering from addiction, most of the time it will not help as you continue enabling their behavior. It takes a lot of strength and courage to stay in a relationship with an addict. Until they get professional help, you are really in a relationship with a man or a woman who is hidden behind this cycle of addiction.

Mateja Petje Slovenia Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management Boca Raton Delray

Mateja Petje -Top 10 relationship deal breakers! (conclusion)

  • 9. Name calling is behavior that is verbally abusive. When it occurs you need to speak up because it’s not acceptable. Name calling can hurt even more sometimes than physical abuse can especially for someone who has a trusting, sensitive heart. For example a Highly Sensitive Person.
  • 10. Betrayal  A betrayer breaks your heart and your trust by engaging in hurtful behaviors such as infidelity, flirting with others, lying to you or exercising extremely poor judgement. In my professional practice I worked with many couples who had suffered infidelity and in some cases, if the relationship had a solid basis, they overcame infidelity issues. However it can takes years. It is always important to love yourself enough and be honest with yourself and not trying to forgive people at every cost.

“4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse” according to Dr. John Gottman

I also wanted to share with you what Dr John Gottman calls “The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. These are 4 main behavior patterns that can destroy a relationship or a marriage (see https://www.gottman.com/blog/the-four-horsemen-the-antidotes/)

Criticism: A complaint focuses on a specific behavior, while a criticism attacks the character of the person.

Defensiveness: Defensiveness is defined as self-protection in the form of righteous indignation or innocent victim hood in attempt to ward off a perceived attack. Many people become defensive when they are being criticized, but the problem is that being defensive never helps to solve the problem at hand. Defensiveness is really a way of blaming your partner.

Contempt: Statements that come from a relative position of superiority. Some examples of displays of contempt include when a person uses sarcasm, cynicism, name-calling, eye rolling, sneering, mockery, and hostile humor. Contempt is the greatest predictor of divorce and must be eliminated.

Stonewalling: Stonewalling occurs when the listener withdraws from the interaction. The antidote is to practice physiological self-soothing. The first step of physiological self-soothing is to stop the conflict discussion. If you keep going, you’ll find yourself exploding at your partner or imploding (stonewalling), neither of which will get you anywhere.

Mateja Petje Unhealthy Relationships-vs Healthy Relationships

Now that we talked about dysfunctional and unhealthy relationship patterns, let’s talk for a minute about key characteristics of a HEALTHY relationship. I like to say, that in a healthy relationship, there is INTER-DEPENDENCE as opposed to co-dependence. Both partners are equal in every aspect and focus on their strengths and work together as a team.

Dr Gottman 7 key tips for a healthy relationship or marriage

https://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/what-happy-families-know/how-to-keep-love-going-strong

1. Emotionally intelligent couples know each other’s world. They know each other’s goals, worries, and hopes.
2. Fondness and admiration are two of the most crucial elements in a long-lasting romance. I suggest to my couples to keep a jar filled with positive statements of each other and remember positive things when things get tough..
3. Seeking partner’s affection and support and give it freely. It doesn’t always have to be a great sex. Affection is even more important.
4. Treating each other with respect even when you disagree.

5. Solve your solvable problems and let go of things you cannot solve at the moment or learn to compromise.

6. Overcome gridlock and “honor” your partners dreams.

7. Create shared meaning so Marriage can have an intentional sense of shared purpose

Highly Sensitive People

HIGHLY SENSITIVE PEOPLE ARE EVERYWHERE

Highly Sensitive People! They’re everywhere! Have you been told you’re “too emotional” or “too needy?” Do you think more deeply about things and worry more than the average person? Do you prefer quiet environments? You’re not alone!

Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron Psychologist & Author

According to Elaine N. Aron, a psychologist and author, in her 1996 book, “The Highly Sensitive Person” Dr Aron discusses individuals with high measures of sensory processing sensitivity. Elaine N. Aron first developed and researched this term in early 1990’s. The results from her work was highly sensitive people were found to be quite common. With as many as one in five people found to possess traits consistent with those of highly sensitive people.

Highly sensitive people are 15% to 20% of the population

Many times Highly Sensitive People suffer from anxiety and depression which can turn into severe clinical depression if they don’t get professional help. They often try to please others and feel guilty when they are not able to meet their needs. Research also indicates that highly sensitive people account for 15% to 20% of the population, which makes it quite a large percentage of humanity. Yet we’ve often been led to believe that sensitivity is weakness.

Highly sensitive people Mateja Petje Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Management Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Depressed Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management

Highly sensitive people & their career choices

Highly sensitive people also often choose careers that are definitely NOT typical. They are very sensitive to the environment and they prefer to work alone to avoid harsh criticism. That would include having to answer to a demanding boss! These careers might include musicians, interpreters (I was an interpreter), as well as people being “on call”, such as medical professionals. They all have one thing in common, they often feel misunderstood, alone, under appreciated and overworked.

Highly sensitive people & how they differ from the average person

1. Highly sensitive people are easily overwhelmed.

Highly sensitive people get easily overwhelmed by their environment whether this represents other people or loved ones, as well as bright lights, noise, strong smells, loud music or sirens. Often they are light sleepers and they have struggled with insomnia due to worrying about what had happened during the day for example. They also tend to be analyzing everything.

2. Highly sensitive people feel guilty all the time.

Highly sensitive people who work in non-traditional jobs many times cannot see family or friends often and they feel guilty about it. They feel more than most people and therefore it’s not easy for them just to let it go. They feel bad when they miss a family dinner, birthday party or a social event.

Highly sensitive people and planning schedules

Many times they are not able to make plans more than a week in advance and many even work on weekends. Now consider people who work a graveyard shift or interpreters. They typically might say there is no such thing as a weekend for them. When everyone celebrates, they need to work. They are also very conscientious, hard working, meticulous and detail-oriented.

3. Highly sensitive people need privacy.

They are often introverted and need time to think and reflect. Others may misunderstand their behavior as being “snooty” or “antisocial.” Many highly sensitive people have learned from young age that they need to keep their feelings and thoughts to themselves as they have been told that they were “weird” or “cry babies.” As children they were often seen as shy. They also prefer to exercise solo. Highly sensitive people tend to avoid team sports as they feel that everyone is watching their every move.

4. Highly sensitive people feel unappreciated.

Musicians are on the top of the list here. Music and art is generally considered an “extra curriculum.”  Many times they are not taken seriously as they don’t have a “real job.” Few people know how much work and dedication it takes to become a well known musician. Not everyone can be the next member of The Beatles! Think about bass players. The average music lover pays very little attention to bass and what it does for the music that they are listening to. Mostly, the lead singer and the guitarist are given the kudos. So they learn to stay in the background not getting the praise that they deserve.

5. Highly sensitive people are more emotionally reactive as they feel more deeply.

Generally speaking, highly sensitive people have more empathy when their friends or even strangers are going through challenges. They feel everything on a deeper level and they are usually very intuitive. They make good social workers, teachers and counselors. However, they need to learn how to take better care of themselves as they are prone to professional burn out. This was one of the first things that I had experienced as a new counselor trying to do more than I could handle. This led to frequent colds and illnesses because the immune system gets compromised.

6. Highly sensitive people are used to hearing that they are too sensitive or take things too personal.

This is especially true of the Western culture that is focused on self-actualization and individualization (remember Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs”). In the US we believe the pharmaceutical industry can solve everything even a person’s temperament. If you study Eastern cultures, for example in Thailand and India, highly sensitive men are never teased, unlike in our North American culture. However in North American culture boys are taught from a young age that to show emotions is not “manly.”

7. Highly sensitive people are more prone to anxiety and depression (if they’ve had a lot of negative past experiences).

Highly sensitive people Mateja Petje Holistic Psychotherapist Stress Management Coach PTSD Trauma Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Anxiety Depression Depressed Tapping Reiki EFT Natural Stress Management

In my professional practice I’ve worked with hundreds of highly sensitive people. Many of them suffered some kind of trauma or abuse which may have scarred them for life. According to Dr Aron having a supportive environment can go a long way to protecting against this trauma & abuse. The other key too is working with a compassionate and trained professional. Parents of highly sensitive children especially need to realize that they have special needs that need to be considered such as explaining things in a non-judgmental way as opposed to using punishment.

8. Highly sensitive people avoid violent movies and TV shows.

Watching violence on TV or in the news can really upset them. Many highly sensitive people choose not to watch the news or violent movies as they feel everything deeply. It may disrupt their sleep as it can lead to violent nightmares.

9. Highly sensitive people are drawn to narcissists.

Since highly sensitive people have high levels of empathy, they often find themselves in relationships with narcissists, who either take advantage of  them or prey on what they perceive to be a weaker group.  Narcissists typically just care about themselves, their status and their image and they lack empathy. Just think about The Picture of Dorian Gray. Remember he fell in love with his own reflection.

10. Highly sensitive people take longer to make decisions.

They are more aware of details and nuances of the situation and weigh pros and cons and this is especially true if there is no right or wrong answer, such as in choosing a color to paint the room. This is because they are considering every possible outcome and they also don’t want to upset anybody. They tend to over analyze everything.

Highly sensitive people overview

Overall, highly sensitive people are still a minority even though with the influx of “new age” and renewed interest in spirituality, they are finding themselves in environments where they feel safe, such as in Reiki circles, meditation groups, or drumming circles where they feel that they can express themselves more freely.

Highly sensitive people uplifting helpful tips

1. Be careful when consuming stimulants.

Consuming too much caffeine can affect your digestion and make you jittery. Instead, try a cup of green tea.

2. You are not alone.

Many famous artists, musicians, teachers and philosophers were highly sensitive people. Use your intuition and ability to be creative to your advantage.

3. It’s okay to be an introvert.

In some cultures, like Asian cultures, being introvert is an advantage. Being introvert helps you to deeply understand not just yourself, but also others.

4. Empathy is an amazing quality

While having empathy can be painful at times, as you feel other people’s pain, it gives you insight and ability to be close to people. Professions such as social work, art, or teaching would be a great fit for you and it would give you an advantage.

5. Be selective when it comes to media

No need to overwhelm yourself with daily negative news. Instead, read inspiring books and make time for your friendships, and spend some time in nature which can be very soothing.

NATURAL REMEDIES & SLEEP SUPPLEMENTS

Are you struggling with getting enough sleep? Maybe you’re able to fall asleep, but you keep waking up? Maybe it’s time to try Natural Remedies & Sleep Supplements. Many of my clients struggle with lack of sleep and poor sleep. Often times it’s due to intrusive and obsessive thoughts related to chronic anxiety and depression. Lack of sleep doesn’t only make us cranky, it also affects our productivity. It can lead to chronic illnesses due to compromised immune system.

Guided Meditation for Sleep

I’ve suffered for years until I learned about meditation. Especially guided meditation which has been really helpful. For quite a long time now I’ve been listening to Michael Sealey. He specializes in Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, Guided Meditation and Sleep Relaxation.

Supplements for natural, non-medical and integrative medicine approach

In addition to guided meditation here are some supplements that you can take. I’ve been an advocate for a natural, non-medical and integrative medicine approach for years and wish I had this book before!

Dr. James Greenblatt recommends several different sleep remedies.

All dosages are estimates as everyone is different. Natural Remedies Sleep Supplements you may find quite useful.

1. Magnesium (“anti stress mineral”) 200-300 mg before bedtime.

2. Valerian (reduces anxiety while improving sleep) 300-500 mg before sleep. Possible side effects are headache, restlessness, sleeplessness and irregular heartbeat.

3. Inositol & 5-HTP Inositol is naturally produced by intestinal bacteria and helps transmit nerve signals and prevents buildup of fat in the liver. Research supports positive benefits for insomnia and OCD. Dosage 1 teaspoon at 8 pm (about 2.8 grams) and 1 teaspoon before bed.

5-HTP is an early form of the neurotransmitter serotonin that is changed to make melatonin. Dosage 50-200 mg 30-60 minutes before bed. DO NOT take if already taking anti-depressants such as Lexapro.

NATURAL REMEDIES & SLEEP SUPPLEMENTS continued

4. Glycine Amino acid produced in the body and is considered an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It calms neurotransmitters so that they don’t fire rapidly. Dosage 3 grams 1 hour before bedtime.

5. GABA A neurotransmitter that helps brain cells calm down and become less excited.  Dosage 500-750 mg with a cup of water and drink half before bedtime. If you wake up during the night, drink the other half. Try 100-250 mg first and then increase the dosage.

6. Melotonin  A Hormone produced by the pineal gland that works with body’s built-in clock to regulate sleep and wake cycles. Your body needs mineral zinc to manufacture melotonin as well as Zinc plays a role in preventing depression.
Dosage: 1-3 mg before sleep.
Possible side effects are drowsiness, upset stomach and headaches.

Mateja Petje’s shares Dr. Maya Sarkisyan’s sleep tips

Recently I attended a lecture by Dr. Maya Sarkisyan who also happens to be my functional medicine doctor. Here are a few more great tips from her for better sleep too. It’s important to note that “one size does not fit all.” It’s key to find the root cause for insomnia or poor sleep. Most often it’s stress, anxiety, and obsessive thinking. However it can also be hormonal changes during the menopause (as in my case) or even mold & allergies.

Here are a few of her suggestions for better sleep

  • Move electronics out of your bedroom. Shut down all the screens. Blue light is very stressful for your nervous system. Make sure you have filters or software on your electronic devices to get rid of blue light. Put your phone on airplane mode, and turn it face down.
  • Keep the temperature cooler during the night than through the day. The best sleep temperature is between 65 and 72 degrees.
  • At least two hours before bedtime stop eating anything and don’t drink alcohol. The best it to have your last bite before 7pm, and have only water or herbal tea after.

Gratitude Natural Stress Management Boca Raton anxiety Mateja Petje Holistic Coaching International trauma depression abuse distance therapy

  • Clean up your environment. It is much better to sleep in a clean room knowing that in the morning you will wake up to an organized space.
  • Relax with a book (instead of TV)  or journal about the day and write down tasks for tomorrow
  • Get blackout curtains and block all the light sources you can. Get your bedroom as dark as possible.
  • If you cannot fall asleep for 30 min – get up, go into another room, have dim lighting only and repeat some of your routines. After 15 minutes you can then go back to bed and try to fall asleep again.
  • Take at least 10 minutes to practice mindful relaxation and/or spiritual practices. Usually, spiritual practices take longer. Examples – Prayer, Meditation, Breathing, Qigong. and practice gratitude.

Mateja Petje shares more Natural Remedies Sleep Supplements tips too

Practicing some form of meditation, and spending time in nature, as well as daily exercise will make you feel better. It will also help you get more restful sleep. If you are unable to shake off intrusive thoughts, I also recommend journaling. If the problem persists, schedule time with a licensed clinician who will help you uncover other reasons for lack of sleep.

I recommend talking to a Naturopath or medical doctor especially if you are already taking medication as some of it may interfere. So in the end don’t forget natural remedies & sleep supplements. Wishing you a restful and peaceful night sleep!

Client Testimonial

“After being in traditional therapy and making no progress, I explored the option of holistic therapy with Mateja.  I loved that her approach was focused on me and how to move forward with my anxiety, negative thoughts & relationship perceptions, instead of focusing on the problems and where they stemmed from.  With EFT, affirmations and tracking my moods, it created more self awareness around my emotions and where they were coming from.  I can happily say that I went from living in a place with high levels of anxiety to virtually none & I am a much happier person all around! She has given me tools that I will continue to utilize for a long time as I continue the healing process.  I can’t say enough amazing things about Mateja!” ~JM, Boca Raton, 11/2016

Achieving New Years Resolutions

Achieving New Years Resolutions

Achieving New Years Resolutions are often difficult because they rarely stick. Have you ever thought about why this occurs and how you can make them last? As I write this it’s only 5 short days before we welcome the year 2019. Are you ready to stick to your resolutions? In the past, have you found yourself making New Year’s resolutions and after a few weeks or if you’re more determined, after a couple of months, you find yourself drifting back to old habits?
You are not alone.

Achieving New Years Resolutions with a plan

While many people have good intentions, without a solid plan, discipline, accountability, and a clear mindset, New Year’s resolutions can become a thing of the past until the next year. Don’t despair. I’m sharing a few tips to teach you how to stick to them this time around.

achieving-new-years-resolutions Holistic Coaching International Mateja Petje Natural Stress Management Licensed Marriage Family Therapist PTSD Trauma tap

6 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Resolutions:

  • Create S.M.A.R.T. goals. I’m sure you’ve heard these before but are you putting them into practice? Goals need to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Here is an example. Let’s say you want to experience less anxiety and more peace in your life. You need to find a way to be specific as to what causes your anxiety. For example uncertainty at your job, finances, a relationship.

achieving-new-years-resolutions Holistic Coaching International Mateja Petje Natural Stress Management Licensed Marriage Family Therapist PTSD Trauma tap

  • Now using a scale of 1-10 to determine where you are and where you want to be. You also need to give yourself time to learn tools to manage anxiety and track your progress realistically. I ask my clients to record their moods daily for at least 30 days and notice thoughts that trigger anxiety or depression.
  • Keep yourself accountable. If you don’t have the resources to hire a coach or a therapist, ask a friend or colleague to be your buddy. Whenever you need to report your progress or lack of it to somebody you will take your goal more seriously. This person can also help you see blind spots and encourage you when you have an off day.
  • Do it daily! If you want to feel better, less anxious and more at peace you need to create healthy daily habits.  Some examples are meditation, relaxation, exercise, getting enough sleep and eating nutritious food. Good nutrition is vital and consists of as an example fresh vegetables, seeds, nuts, organic and grass-fed meat/poultry. In addition ideally, you want to dedicate at least 15 minutes in the morning and in the evening to practice positive self-thinking and self-love.

Achieving New Years Resolutions & 6 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Resolutions cont’d

  • Work on your limiting beliefs. Think about why you haven’t been successful before. Many times, my clients know what the issue is yet they don’t know how to stop or change. If you want to change your beliefs you need to first know what they are. Often, I hear this, “I am not good enough” or “I am a failure.” A great tool is to question your beliefs and ask yourself if they are still serving you. If not it’s time to create new ones as many were formed before age 7 when we were young children and didn’t know any better.
  • Believe in yourself and never give up even when you have an off day. Create visual representations that you can see daily such as a vision board. A vision board has been my friend and over the years I have had several of them. I’m a firm believer in using them because they are powerful! My vision boards even helped me find my soulmate as well as enabling me to create a vision for my life. It’s getting closer to my dream every day. Persistence and determination go a long way.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous 2019. Remember that you and only YOU are the creator of your life, so stick to it!

GRATITUDE IS THE BEGINNING OF A BLISSFUL LIFE

Gratitude Natural Stress Management

Are you stressed out or are you feeling stuck? So start being grateful! Being gratitude is mostly at the forefront of people’s minds with Thanksgiving. However if we start our day with gratitude on a daily basis, even in the midst of challenges, our life will start to change in a more positive direction.

I must admit that I have not always felt this way. You see I used to be upset with events and people when things did not go as I had planned. Things started to change when I started to apply the teachings of the Law of Attraction and observing my thoughts and guiding them.  Sometimes we get angry with the world or God (as we may perceive it), but this is exactly the time when we need to apply the Law of Gratitude. There might be lessons to be learned that we might not be aware of.

Years of conditioning will not change overnight. It requires patience, faith, and willingness to change your outdated belief patterns.

Goodwill and Gratitude

You may even face resistance from your loved ones and people that are close to you! As the saying goes “misery loves company.” But so does goodwill and gratitude. Whenever possible, surround yourself with people who have a positive outlook on life. Don’t waste time by complaining, blaming others and playing a victim.

In his book, Wallace states that “the more gratefully we fix our minds on the supreme good, when things come to us, the more good we will receive, and the more rapidly they will come.“ Grateful mind brings us closer to the Creator, God, Life Force, Higher Power or however you want to call it, from which the blessings come.

He further states that it is absolutely necessary to follow the Law of Gratitude in order to achieve the results we are seeking. Whether this is financial prosperity, health, relationships or buying a new home.

Changing your thoughts in order to change your emotions

When I work with clients, they often become angry, depressed, and anxious, as well as hopeless about their life, not knowing how to change things. The first thing I tell them is to start focusing and observing their language and their thoughts. Then to start changing their thoughts in order to change their emotions.

I believe that we are all the creators of our life. By choosing our thoughts and being grateful for everything in our life (yes even tough lessons and pain) we will create a life that we have always wanted. Wallace also adds that “without gratitude you cannot long keep from dissatisfied thoughts regarding things as they are. The moment you PERMIT your mind to dwell with dissatisfaction upon things as they are, you begin to lose ground.”  The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best.

Faith in ourselves

In addition, FAITH is born of gratitude. We need to have faith in ourselves that we can overcome our “Conditioned Self”. Primarily this is based on fear, worry and negativity. This is the time to perform a daily action of thinking about what we are grateful for. It could be as simple as being grateful for a nice sunny day (and we are very lucky here in South Fl when the rest of the country has winter storms and cold).

I suggest to my clients to keep a daily gratitude and intention journal. Writing things down can make a huge difference. We want to live in our “Authentic Self” which is based on love, gratitude, joy and faith.

After 4-5 months, my anxiety levels is nearly nonexistent” Jessica in Boca Raton 11/16

Mental Health Benefits of Physical Exercise

Mental Health Benefits of Physical Exercise

Mental Health Benefits of Physical Exercise are numerous! I must admit, I’ve never been the typical “gym rat.” Luckily I grew up in the mountains of Slovenia where there are plenty of hiking opportunities. Frankly I’ve always loved the outdoors. Even when I was in college, I still found time on weekends to go hiking with my friends. It was fun and it helped me to stay fit. At the same time I also enjoyed the company of my friends.

In addition to hiking, dancing has also been my passion. Initially, that meant going to clubs. It wasn’t really until I turned 26 and broke up with my ex that I found solace in dancing. This was while healing a broken heart after he cheated with one of my childhood friends. My dysfunctional family, the hurt and pain related to my childhood and adolescent abuse, as well as a broken heart, led me to move to the US in October of 1997. This is where I joined my now ex-husband an American.

Importance of exercise

I never truly understood the importance of exercise until years later. One of my boyfriends who was an athlete and a runner encouraged me to join the gym. At this point I didn’t enjoy going to clubs anymore. At that time as well I didn’t enjoy listening to hip-hop, dance, or techno. But I did take some belly dancing classes and I danced at drumming circles.

Medication & their Side Effects

My healing journey took me to work with traditional psychotherapists, coaches, healers, and psychics. I was on and off medication for clinical depression and anxiety for the last 20 years. It had bad side effects such as weight gain, loss of libido, gastrointestinal issues, and even suicidal thoughts when life pressure and stress got to me.

Researching Alternative and Holistic approaches

Over time I kept researching alternative and holistic approaches to healing from abuse, trauma, chronic anxiety and depression. I learned about Buddhism and Hinduism and started meditating. This is something I have been doing for 20 years now. Still, I have not been able to find lasting solutions to stay off medication for any extended periods of time. Stress didn’t help me! You see I had worked at many toxic workplaces while building my private counseling and coaching practice.

Learning about functional medicine

Finally, a few years ago I learned about functional medicine. Now I began to understand the connection between my mental health and nutrition, as well as my gastrointestinal issues and lack of exercise due to working long hours. So I adopted a healthier, low carb diet. Quickly I lost over 15 lbs and I was able to get off medication and started taking B12 and CQ10 supplement.

I also stopped binge-watching Netflix and avoided drama and violence. Functional medicine, as opposed to traditional Western medicine, is more concerned with root causes, not symptom reduction, quick fixes, and taking an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication.

According to functional medicine, the key steps to health include:

 1. Proper nutrition (rich in healthy fats, veggies, protein, nuts, seeds, and fruit)

 2. Exercise (daily as much as possible)

 3. Adequate sleep (minimum 7-8 hrs.)

 4. Nurturing relationships and socializing

 5. Stress management and spiritual practices

James M Greenblatt, MD, Breakthrough Depression Solution

According to James M Greenblatt, MD, in his book Breakthrough Depression Solution, exercise is important and plays a key role in fighting depression. Several studies have proven the efficacy of exercise in significantly decreasing depression symptoms. For example, in a study conducted in 2013, researchers assigned 48, alcohol-dependent, inactive patients to a twelve-week, moderate exercise program.

The other group of participants was simply told to exercise. The participants reported far less drinking as compared to those who had been simply told to exercise. Similarly, in another study conducted by a Columbia University of Epidemiology survey, over 60% of participants who exercised were much less likely to suffer a major depression (p. 152).

According to Dr. Greenblatt, exercise has several benefits in fighting depression (p. 154):

  1. Reverses Harmful Effects of Stress
  2.  Lifts Depression
  3.  Improves Learning
  4.  Builds Self-esteem and Improves Body Image
  5.  Leaves You Feeling Euphoric or Joyful

He also recommends taking supplements such as B12 and Carnitine, as many clients have very low energy and lack the motivation to exercise. The best type of exercise is probably interval training, because it helps to get the heart rate up quickly. However, any type of exercise can help including walking, yoga, Tai chi, strength training, biking, swimming or dancing.

It’s important that you set realistic goals and start slowly. For example, 15 minutes three times a week gradually increasing your exercise time. Do what you love and don’t force yourself to go to the gym if it’s not your cup of tea.
Have fun!

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & 5 tips for treatment

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & 5 tips for treatment

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD? It’s Veterans Day 2018. In recent years so many war veterans have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition there is now an above average rate of incidents of shootings. Specifically there was even a recent event close to my home, in Parkland, Fl. That and other things made me decide to write this article. Mainly I wrote this so that it will hopefully help to bring some clarity as to what PTSD is and some suggestions as to how it can be treated.

Correct treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Unfortunately there is no one correct treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. However I based this on my personal experience. Having suffered significant trauma which was a result of all types of abuse during my childhood and adolescence. As well as experiencing trauma related to being in abusive relationships later on in my adult life. I have experienced nightmares and some flashbacks for as long as I remember. This just serves as a guideline. Therefore I strongly recommend that if you feel that you suffer from PTSD that you consult a licensed clinician or a psychologist.

How the psychology field defines Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association revised the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnostic criteria. This is in the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; 1). Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is included in a new category in DSM-5, Trauma, and Stressor-Related Disorders. Full copyrighted criteria are available from the American Psychiatric Association. Here I just list a few.

Criteria to be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

What does it take to be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? The person would have had to have been previously exposed a number of things. Death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence, or similar. This is including any kind of abuse or domestic violence, experiencing it directly or indirectly by observing it.

Typical symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Typical symptoms include: nightmares, flashbacks, emotional distress, and intrusive thoughts.

For example, for years following the abuse, I would have continued nightmares. Inaddition I also developed sensitivity to criticism and aversion to anybody talking loudly. I would experience physical sensations, such as vomiting or upset stomach. Basically, I developed a trigger – in this case, a loud voice.

Additional Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms

Another example is in the case of people that were exposed to violence. This includes shooting and guns. They develop emotional distress with ANY loud noises that resemble a gun shot. It can take years to heal and not to experience emotional distress when the trigger presents itself.

For a person to meet the criteria for PTSD, the symptoms need to last at least a month. They also experience distress and functional impairment in several key areas of life such as social and occupational

So what can we do about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Most of all you should know that you are not alone. What helped me most is to seek support of friends. They normalized my feelings and helped me to see that what I was experiencing was not the norm. My boyfriend’s family was nothing like my own. Fortunately I experienced joy and laughter, and not abuse and tension, which was the norm in my family when I was an adolescent.

I also worked with several therapists, coaches, and healers. By now I had learned how to identify my triggers and how to manage my emotions and “rewrite my story”. One approach that was helpful was EMDR. Helping me with a pervasive memory of being severely beaten. The fortunate thing was finding a therapist that was trained in EMDR. After a few sessions I was able to tell my story without crying and was able to emotionally detach from the incident.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

However, there was an approach that finally started to help me. This is in terms of stopping intrusive and limiting thoughts and beliefs. This occured when I learned and received training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). In essence, this approach focuses on the linguistic and how we store and process memories.

Negative Programming  as it relates to Trauma & Abuse

I have been able to start understanding that my negative programming was due to being exposed to abuse and trauma that colored my world. Largely I saw the world as a threat and subconsciously sought experiences and people that confirmed that the world is not a safe place and that people cannot be trusted. Only when I started changing my beliefs did my life and my well-being improve.

Join a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Support Group

Join a support group. Other people who have gone through similar experiences can not only offer validation, you will also feel understood. Not many people (including some therapists) really understood why I am not able to get better. This is in spite of years of therapy and medication. Medication can be helpful in the initial stages. But the key is to understand the root causes and how your beliefs and thoughts contribute to the disorder.

Keep journaling. When we are overwhelmed with thoughts keep journaling! It’s key that we find healthy ways to manage our thoughts and get them out of our head.

Learn stress management and breathing techniques. I think meditation literally saved my life. Previously I studied different modalities including mindfulness, zen, guided meditation, and meditation based on mantra (the Art of Living Foundation). Finally I was able to heal insomnia and significantly reduced anxiety and depression symptoms.

Hopefully this blog post was helpful. Take a moment and let us know in the comments section.

“I am writing this so others may benefit from what I was experiencing so that it may aid or help anyone who is having any or all of these symptoms: worry, despair, extreme anxiety, helplessness, loss of self-confidence, sleeplessness, extreme irritability, just feeling real low and much of the same.

When I came to see Mateja few months ago, I was experiencing all these symptoms. See I was overwhelmed with changes at work and parenting. Yet I continued to work until one day I just broke down and wanted to put myself out of misery. Now I knew I needed help and thank God I reached out and met Mateja. The most important thing for me was to get professional help. I tried for months to get better on my own. Yes I wish I had reached out for help sooner.
