Psychotherapist or Life Coach hiring. What’s the difference? First let’s talk about the root of the problem. Did you know that stress and anxiety are one of the leading causes for seeking professional help? More specifically, more than 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety and 20 million suffer from depression. One of 10 Americans is on some kind of anti-depressant.* What makes this far worse, in my personal & professional experience, is that people are confused as to where to turn to for help. *(M. Social media and the internet have enabled us more efficiency seeking help. Unfortunately it has also created more possibility for sub-par professionals. Frankly these are people who are not properly trained to offer services. They often offer advise that can be misleading and do more damage than good. 

Maybe you’ve heard about the “Hippocratic Oath”? The key to everything is not to do harm. The “Hippocratic Oath” is an oath historically taken by physicians. It is one of the most widely known of Greek medical texts. In its original form, it requires a new physician to swear an oath. An oath to/by a number of healing gods, to uphold specific ethical standards.

There are certain specific Professionals that are properly trained to help clients with mental and emotional illnesses or disorders. They are psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, counselors, licensed social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists. In addition licensed mental health counselors and several others mental health professionals, such as psychiatric nurses. 

But this is definitely NOT something for life coaches! Including “certified” life coaches. They might be able to help clients with “life challenges”. Those that require setting goals, or improving skills. This might be for example changing a career, or finding a romantic partner. But there are limitations. Frankly most are not even aware of them and render services out of a drive to make a quick buck.

As in any other field, there are “good and bad” therapists. There are “good and bad” life coaches. I do know some good life coaches who have ethics and understand limitations. However, more often than not, I’m coming across unqualified and unethical life coaches. Thus far that has been my experience of living in S Fla for over 20 years. Also having been a therapist now over 15 of those years.

Years ago I wrote and clarified distinctions between each in my previous article. It was entitled “The Difference Between a Psychologist, Psychotherapist and a Psychiatrist Demistified” June 2014.

Psychotherapist Life Coach hiring- “Good & bad” therapists (cont.)

There is a problem that exists in my opinion. That is the coaching field is not upheld to any high rigorous ethical and legal considerations. Not as it is in the case of licensed mental health professionals. The only regulating body is the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Therefore the coaching schools that are following their standards, are more likely to offer quality programs. But unfortunately it’s still not a guarantee. That’s why ethics and moral obligations to refer clients out when you’re NOT qualified is the key here.

Once to my horror I observed a “healer/life coach’ proudly describe how they treated a client, who was suicidal! First of all, all clients who enter mental health treatment with a licensed clinician, are guaranteed privacy. This includes social media! This also means being HIPPA compliant! So this was already the first violation. Not to mention the fact that this person didn’t have any training whatsoever! That is key in cases like this.

Over the years I have had several incidents with life coaches and their specific approach. I actually attended 6 months of intense training by a coaching school. This school is accredited by the International Coaching Federation. This is in addition to graduate school and other training over the years.

Psychotherapist Life Coach hiring – “Good & bad” Life Coaches

I came across one such poorly run life coaching programs locally here in S Fla. I actually read on their website that the founder had a criminal and drug history. The website was not created very well by the way! Over the last 30 years of being in education and the psychology field I have studied many self-help authors. I do believe that people who had to deal with adverse life situations can be one of the best teachers!

There are several people that come to mind. For example Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer, Donna Eden and more just to name a few. These are folks that come to my mind when you talk about overcoming enormous adversity. Then in turn sharing that gift with others.

However they were also very humble people! Moreover their first priority was not sales but rather SHARING what they had learned with others. They also didn’t cross boundaries when it came to others’ mental health.

I cannot say that ALL the trainers from this particular program are like the three trainers I had met personally. But this happened in the span of over 10 years. It seemed to me like theirs is a general approach. Their obvious lack of knowledge how to approach clients remains just the same.

That is also why I can only go by what I had personally experienced. I might have even taken their workshop if I wasn’t so turned off by several things. First their lack of proper interpersonal, communication as well as sales skills. This is in addition to what I saw as a complete lack of knowledge of basics of human development & psychology. This is something that has happened years ago but it really stands out in my memory.

I came across another life coach and I’ll share that experience too. This happened when I was part of a coaching/self-growth program back in 2004. This was at one of the networking meetings when I had just graduated. However I was immediately turned off by her aggressive sales pitch. In graduate school the first thing we learn is UNCONDITIONAL POSITIVE REGARD for a client.

This means you need to work with people where they are. This person tried to convince me that I desperately needed the help of this particular program. Of course she happening to be selling it too right at the moment. But I needed to buy it because my life is “such a mess”! She said that “I will not be successful” because my “strategy” was no good. Amazingly she went on to say I had created my own trauma. Basically everything negative that happened in my life was my fault.

This happened on two more occasions over the years with two different coaches from this particular program. Of course the last encounter I just told the person I had no interest. My only intention to meet with her was socially. I had expressed lack of interest due to my previous experiences with two other coaches from this program. Unfortunately she even persisted & tried to put me down and shame me as well!

Frankly the worst thing was that I was in a car accident almost around that time in my life. Unfortunately I was a victim of road rage. However she persisted in telling me “I created and attracted this”. When you examine this it tends to sound more like new age philosophy.

The worst of all too was this person really didn’t take time to understand my personal situation. She missed the fact that I actually am suffering from mental illness. She blindly kept pushing her agenda.

I couldn’t even respond in the moment because I needed time to reflect on what happened. She was overwhelming to me in those moments. This is awful behavior especially for a “mental health” practitioner or even one pretending to be!

Psychotherapist Life Coach hiring – Shaming and putting people down for sales

I do believe that mindset is key. Any properly trained clinician knows that shaming and putting people down is the last thing you want to do. Especially when you say you want to help that person. This kind of approach could break a person who is struggling. Perhaps because of their exposure for example to previous harshness and criticism.

Here is the bottom line. Even if the program works for some people, their sales pitch clearly shows to me that there is no depth. People who sell this program in most cases have no proper training or credentials. At least the ones I have come across. Specifically this person only took this course 6 years ago. Prior to this she was in a service industry before and now calls herself a “Master Trainer.”

Why do I say that? It seemed like it came with a sense of entitlement. I’m very intuitive and sense people’s energy very quickly. In the past I just didn’t trust myself enough with this “gut feeling” or “intuition”. However in most cases my gut is right!  

I have always been an open minded person and worked all my life. Honestly I’ve worked at least for 30 years on healing my own trauma. I’ve earned a Master’s Degree from the highly reputable University of Miami in Coral Gables Fl. I graduated with Honors! So understand this is not the only case I have come across.

I had a similar experience with another self-growth program, that will remain nameless! The short version is even though I gained some skills. The way they go about with their sales totally turned me off from further exploring it. They call it enrolling people!

How can you be ethical when you are desperate to make money? Ethically speaking don’t you need to really understand if this person is a match?  Or is just about you and the particular program you happen to be selling?

Psychotherapist Life Coach hiring –Proper training (Cont.)

So my concern is therefore two fold. First most of these life coaches have no proper training in human psychology and understanding. They can cause serious damage in cases where people have experienced significant life trauma or have underlying mental illness. This occurs by making them “wrong”, coercing them and using aggressive tactics.

Fortunately I have worked on raising my self esteem which used to be very low. Consequently, many people that are struggling with mental health disorders also have a difficult time asserting themselves. Especially if they were abused, because of the potential for this low self esteem, predators can and do take advantage! 

This taking “advantage” of their clients innocence and desperation and willingness to try anything to feel better is awful! They do not have proper training. They also are not able to distinguish who is the right candidate for their program. Think about that. It has the potential to make this a really terrible situation.

Another issue is also the high cost of these programs or coaching sessions. Recently my client told me that his friend is a life coach. His friend offered him and a friend a family discount rate for a coaching session. This discounted rate was $500/hr! Which of course is absurd! Please be observant and do your research!

Psychotherapist Life Coach hiring –Questions to help you decide

Here are some basic questions that might help you when you’re deciding between a licensed clinician/psychotherapist or a life coach.

1. Where did you get your training and what are your credentials? Is your school accredited?

2. How much experience do you have with this particular issue that I am struggling with?

3. Does this issue/disorder that I’m struggling with fall under mental health and needs to be properly diagnosed? More specifically does it instead relate more to certain goals I want to accomplish in life? For example this might be getting fit, losing weight, changing career or finding a life partner.

4. Is this person really listening to me? Will they help me even if it means he or she needs to refer me out to a licensed clinician? Unfortunately, is this just another person simply trying to “close the sale”. A person really not interested in my well being?

5. Trust your intuition if something doesn’t feel right meaning listen to your gut and do more research. Ask for testimonials, credentials, references and licensing board, if applicable. You are worth it!

Mateja Petje Clinical Depression and seven signs of clinical depression. We all get sad or down, however there is a difference when somebody is feeling stressed out or depressed because of a job loss, relationship troubles or illness. It CAN lead to clinical depression.

Mateja Petje Clinical Depression -Victim of your past?

 

Today I wanted to share with you something that I’ve been struggling with all my life and the good news is I had a breakthrough after talking to a wise friend.

For years I’ve worked with therapists, healers and coaches to release trauma from the past and my “victim” role. You see a wise friend told me how to get more into depth and start taking full responsibility for my feelings, thoughts, behaviors and actions as well as my choices and who I let into my inner space.

I’m excited to be able to finally meet my real “Authentic Self” that is based on pure love, compassion, joy and peace. This is as opposed to relying on projections and roles from my “Conditioned Self” (as described by my mentor Shelley Riutta) that is based on guilt, anger, fear and other negative emotions and expectations and dependence on other people.

Now you might say, this is all good and well, but these things actually happened. The thing is that we see everything based on our past experiences with other people, events and circumstances. If we didn’t have an emotional attachment to a person or event that happened in our past, we wouldn’t have such a strong emotional reaction that acts as a “trigger” to a current situation. This means that we have not fully healed the situation and our emotional response to it.

This is the basis of my work whether I work with couples or individuals. One of my approaches to healing is using Imago (to read about Imago check out my website). If we didn’t have attachment to the past we would not feel pain, anger, rejection or whatever we are feeling.

For example, if a woman was abused in her childhood or past romantic relationships, and if she hasn’t healed the past event and emotional attachment to it, she will unconsciously repeat the same scenario in not just intimate relationships but also platonic relationships. This is whether business or personal and more importantly, continue carrying this pattern onto her children or any future relationships.

If she is in a relationship with a man, who had similar patterns of being a”victim” of the situation, they will keep “triggering” each other’s wounds until they both take full responsibility for their thoughts, beliefs, actions, and choices.

Remember, no matter what, you always have a choice. Even women or men that are abused in a relationships still have a choice which is not easy, but they CAN leave the relationship and many times a professional is needed to help them build back their self-esteem and self-love to be able to make that step. Finances might get in the way, and most people prefer to remain in the comfort zone instead of being vulnerable and looking deeply into themselves.

With so many war veterans diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as above than average incidents of shootings, and specifically the recent shooting close to my home, in Parkland, Fl, I decided to write this article. In order to bring some clarity as to what PTSD is and also to offer some suggestions as to how it can be treated.

Understand that there is no one correct treatment. I base this conclusion on my personal experience of having suffered significant trauma which was a result of all types of abuse during my childhood and adolescence and even later on in my adult life. For example I have experienced trauma related to being in abusive relationships. Frankly I had experienced nightmares and some flashbacks for as long as I remember.

Mateja Petje PTSD Diagnosis – Seeking help

 

Remember the information in this blog should serve as a guideline. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend that if you feel that you suffer from PTSD that you consult a licensed clinician or a psychologist.

Now let’s first take a look as to how the psychology field defines PTSD.

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association revised the PTSD diagnostic criteria in the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; 1). PTSD is included in a new category in DSM-5, Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders. Full copyrighted criteria are available from the American Psychiatric Association (1). Here I am just listing a few.

To be diagnosed with PTSD, the person was exposed to: death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence, or similar, including any kind of abuse or domestic violence, experiencing it directly or indirectly by observing it.

Typical symptoms include: nightmares, flashbacks, emotional distress, and intrusive thoughts.
 
For example, for years following the abuse, I would have continued nightmares and I also developed sensitivity to criticism and aversion to anybody talking loudly. I would experience physical sensations, such as vomiting or upset stomach. Basically, I developed a trigger and in this case it was a loud voice.

Another example, would be in the case of people that were exposed to violence. This would include shootings and guns, where they develop emotional distress with ANY loud noises that resemble a gun shot. It can take years to heal and to not experience emotional distress when the trigger presents itself.

For a person to meet the criteria for PTSD, the symptoms need to last at least a month and they also experience distress and functional impairment in several key areas of life such as social and occupational.

So what can we do about it? 

1.  Most of all know that you are not alone! What helped me most is to seek support of friends who normalized my feelings. In addition that what I was experiencing was not the norm. My boyfriend’s family was nothing like my own where I experienced joy and laughter. Not abuse and tension which was the norm in my family when I was an adolescent.

2.  I also worked with several therapists, coaches, and healers. This was where I learned how to identify my triggers and how to manage my emotions and “rewrite my story”. One approach that was helpful with a pervasive memory of being severely beaten was finding a therapist that was trained in EMDR. After a few sessions I was able to tell my story without crying and I was able to emotionally detach from the incident.

However, the approach that finally started to help me in stopping intrusive and limiting thoughts and beliefs is when I learned and received training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). In essence, this approach focuses on the linguistic and how we store and process memories.

I have been able to start understanding that my negative programming was due to being exposed to abuse and trauma that colored my world. See I saw the world as a threat and subconsciously sought experiences and people that confirmed that my world was not a safe place and that people cannot be trusted. Only when I started changing my beliefs did my life and my well-being begin to improve.

3.    Join a support groupOther people who have gone through similar experiences can not only offer validation but you will also feel understood. Not many people (including some therapists) really understood why I was not able to get better. This is in spite of years of therapy and medication. Medication can be helpful in the initial stages, but key is to understand the root causes and how your beliefs and thoughts contribute to the disorder.

4.     Do journaling. When we are overwhelmed with thoughts it’s key that we find healthy ways to manage them and get them out of our head.
 
5.     Learn stress management and breathing techniques. I think meditation literally saved my life. I studied different modalities including mindfulness, zen, guided meditation and meditation based on mantra. See the Art of Living Foundation. I was able to heal insomnia and significantly reduce anxiety and depression symptoms.

Still, in my clinical practice, these numbers tend to be quite different. Many women, young or old, report having strained relationships with their mothers. Quite often, they suffer from low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and unfulfilled relationships. They blame themselves not knowing what went wrong and why they cannot form a lasting loving relationship with a man. Many times they did not have a good role model as to what constitutes a healthy and loving relationship or a marriage.

So the bond between mothers and daughters is very complex. The bond starts to already develop during pregnancy. Research shows that even fetuses can identify when their mom is stressed and therefore stress can indirectly affect the child’s emotional blue-print.

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day – Attending Miami University

 

 

When I was pursuing my master’s degree at the University of Miami, I wrote my best essay on the importance of a secure attachment with parents, and especially mothers. Those who are lucky  enough get this kind of secure attachment however many others who are not so lucky suffer due to insecure and avoidance attachment. This is characterized by fear, anxiety and feelings of abandonment.

Unfortunately, my experience was similar to many other daughters growing up in dysfunctional families. My family on my mother’s side has experienced generations of alcoholism and violence. Men tend to be violent and use alcohol as a coping mechanism. Many times this was an escape from mental and emotional illnesses, including PTSD which my grandfather suffered from and in the end it cost him his life.

Mateja Petje Mother’s Day – Coming to America

 

My mom was not an alcoholic, however she never healed from her own trauma. Instead she lashed out. In my tender teen years, I was abused physically, emotionally and mentally. She never sought help.  This was just not what you did. Seeking help for emotional and mental issues is still stigmatized even to this day.

I had to physically move across the ocean from Slovenia to the US to finally heal from my own trauma. I am the first in my family who broke the cycle and decided I didn’t want to live this kind of life moreover that I deserve a loving relationship. In therapy I learned a lot about myself and why I developed clinical depression. My healing journey was long and it’s still an ongoing process.

At the same time, it was also a blessing in disguise as I have been able to help hundreds of women to heal from abuse, trauma, difficult relationships, low self-esteem and the lack of self-love. The women I’ve worked with now have confidence, improved relationships and they have made peace with the past.

Here are some suggestions how to heal and improve your relationship with your mother:

 

1.    Forgive your mom and let go. Write a letter to your mom expressing everything and then burn it. You are doing this for your sake so that you don’t carry this burden.

2.    Think about all the good stuff. Don’t always dwell on the bad stuff. One of my fondest memories is when my mom brought me breakfast in bed on Saturdays.

3.    Be your own best parent. Think about what you have always needed from your mom but never got it. Pamper yourself.

4.    Remember that your mom is just doing the best that she can. She learned all she knows from her mother.

5.    When your mom starts with her “usual” nagging, or she is being negative or critical, just gently disengage. Set the boundaries and practice “tough love.”

Growing up in Europe, I feel that I have received some advantages because I learned early in my life that it cannot be just about all work and no fun. Even as a 23 year old starting my career, I was entitled to a minimum of 18 paid vacation days and unlimited sick time.  Things have changed with Slovenia now becoming a part of more capitalistic, western approach, due to being a part of the European Union (since 2005) however those values have stayed with me.

Even though I have been working hard and have been investing in my personal and professional life, SELF-CARE has always been important to me and I have been always on the lookout for ways to integrate self-care and fun in my life and have helped my clients to do the same.

Here are some of suggestions that you can apply to your life right away:

1Think about if your current job is what you truly care about. True, in this economy it may not be as easy to find a more suitable job. However make an honest assessment of the situation and if the answer is “no”, create a vision of what kind of job you truly do want. What kind of company do you want to work for? What are some of the most important things? Work environment? Benefits? Flexibility? Time off? Ask yourself these questions.

2. If you do decide you need to stay at your current job or if you are a business owner figure out what specific changes you need to make to feel happier. Do you need to have an honest conversation with your manager? Do you need to delegate more? Maybe your employer would consider having you work from home a couple of days a week?

3. Focus on the positive. If you constantly dwell on the negative that’s how your life will look like. So focus on the positive!

4Take breaks and especially take time for your lunch. You will be more productive by taking time to re-energize and maybe even take a walk around the block. (That includes taking a break from cell phones and iPods!)

5. Instead of dealing with stress and anxiety by consuming too many caffeinated drinks and pastries, grab fresh fruit or a fruit smoothie & some nuts.

6Seek support. We all need times to have somebody listen to us. Take time out and find the support you need.

7. Just BREATHE! Adopt stress relief techniques such as yoga and guided meditation. Practice staying in the moment. When you work, focus on the tasks at hand. When you relax, just focus on that specific moment whether it is drinking a cup of tea, enjoying a sunset or playing with your children.

You might be a stay at home mom or dad or a professional or business owner, the issue remains the same. We all want love, understanding, and a shoulder to cry on. We have all read enough self help books, or even spent years in therapy, yet we are not getting the results.  And this goes for both men and women alike. In my professional practice I utilize something called the Imago Approach, a concept founded by Harville and Helen Hendrix. You can find several books which you might find helpful on my website www.NaturalStressManagement.com.

According to this theory, we attract partners in our life that remind us about our primary caregivers, who are generally our parents, and that includes both for their positive and negative traits. To give you an example, a woman who grew up in a home where her mother was very submissive, might find herself attracting domineering and controlling men like her father.

By the way, an excellent book I often refer to is by Doreen Virtue, Assertiveness for Earth Angels. Some of these behaviors are more call for an improvement, while others could be too toxic and you might need to leave the relationship.

It’s important to know what your DEAL BREAKERS are and what you can tolerate, however there are some that deserve our attention and I am just mentioning a few common ones that can destroy even a happy relationship.

  • 1. Interrupting – the person who continuously interrupts you is not interested in what you have to say. Very often, the person who constantly interrupts is frequently anxious or hyperactive (and that might be due to use of stimulants, such as coffee). You need to tell them something like: “Excuse me, I am not done talking yet” and be assertive.
  • 2. Constant correcting – this is even worse than interrupting. You constantly walk on eggshells. You need to be assertive and tell them that it feels more  like he or she is acting as your teacher and not your partner.
  • 3. Clingy/needy behavior. Again you need to tell them you are busy with projects and set proper boundaries.
  • 4. Stalking is even worse and in some cases you might need to get a restraining order if situation doesn’t improve.
  • 5. Guilt-tripping or manipulating people. You feel resentful and angry. It’s important to say NO and stick to it.

  • 6. Angerholics are addicted to being angry. This anger might be a result of upbringing, or also deep feelings of inferiority, disguised as anger. It’s important to get a professional help especially if the angry person continues to be in denial and doesn’t respond to common sense.
  • 7. Controlling behavior where typically controlling people act out immaturely or with anger when they feel that they are not in control.
  • 8. Addictions, including substance abuse reminds us it’s important to understand that any addiction needs to be treated by a professional. If you find yourself always pleading with the person suffering from addiction, most of the time it will not help as you continue enabling their behavior. It takes a lot of strength and courage to stay in a relationship with an addict. Until they get professional help, you are really in a relationship with a man or a woman who is hidden behind this cycle of addiction.

  • 9. Name calling is behavior that is verbally abusive. When it occurs you need to speak up because it’s not acceptable. Name calling can hurt even more sometimes than physical abuse can especially for someone who has a trusting, sensitive heart. For example a Highly Sensitive Person.
  • 10. Betrayal  A betrayer breaks your heart and your trust by engaging in hurtful behaviors such as infidelity, flirting with others, lying to you or exercising extremely poor judgement. In my professional practice I worked with many couples who had suffered infidelity and in some cases, if the relationship had a solid basis, they overcame infidelity issues. However it can takes years. It is always important to love yourself enough and be honest with yourself and not trying to forgive people at every cost. 

 

“4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse” according to Dr. John Gottman

I also wanted to share with you what Dr John Gottman calls “The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. These are 4 main behavior patterns that can destroy a relationship or a marriage (see https://www.gottman.com/blog/the-four-horsemen-the-antidotes/)

Criticism: A complaint focuses on a specific behavior, while a criticism attacks the character of the person.

Defensiveness: Defensiveness is defined as self-protection in the form of righteous indignation or innocent victim hood in attempt to ward off a perceived attack. Many people become defensive when they are being criticized, but the problem is that being defensive never helps to solve the problem at hand. Defensiveness is really a way of blaming your partner.

Contempt: Statements that come from a relative position of superiority. Some examples of displays of contempt include when a person uses sarcasm, cynicism, name-calling, eye rolling, sneering, mockery, and hostile humor. Contempt is the greatest predictor of divorce and must be eliminated.

Stonewalling: Stonewalling occurs when the listener withdraws from the interaction. The antidote is to practice physiological self-soothing. The first step of physiological self-soothing is to stop the conflict discussion. If you keep going, you’ll find yourself exploding at your partner or imploding (stonewalling), neither of which will get you anywhere.

Achieving New Years Resolutions are often difficult because they rarely stick. Have you ever thought about why this occurs and how you can make them last? As I write this it’s only 5 short days before we welcome the year 2019. Are you ready to stick to your resolutions? In the past, have you found yourself making New Year’s resolutions and after a few weeks or if you’re more determined, after a couple of months, you find yourself drifting back to old habits?
You are not alone.

While many people have good intentions, without a solid plan, discipline, accountability, and a clear mindset, New Year’s resolutions can become a thing of the past until the next year. Don’t despair. I’m sharing a few tips to teach you how to stick to them this time around.

6 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Resolutions:

 

  • Create S.M.A.R.T. goals. I’m sure you’ve heard these before but are you putting them into practice? Goals need to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Here is an example. Let’s say you want to experience less anxiety and more peace in your life. You need to find a way to be specific as to what causes your anxiety. For example uncertainty at your job, finances, a relationship.

  • Now using a scale of 1-10 to determine where you are and where you want to be. You also need to give yourself time to learn tools to manage anxiety and track your progress realistically. I ask my clients to record their moods daily for at least 30 days and notice thoughts that trigger anxiety or depression.
  • Keep yourself accountable. If you don’t have the resources to hire a coach or a therapist, ask a friend or colleague to be your buddy. Whenever you need to report your progress or lack of it to somebody you will take your goal more seriously. This person can also help you see blind spots and encourage you when you have an off day.
  • Do it daily! If you want to feel better, less anxious and more at peace you need to create healthy daily habits.  Some examples are meditation, relaxation, exercise, getting enough sleep and eating nutritious food. Good nutrition is vital and consists of as an example fresh vegetables, seeds, nuts, organic and grass-fed meat/poultry. In addition ideally, you want to dedicate at least 15 minutes in the morning and in the evening to practice positive self-thinking and self-love.

Achieving New Years Resolutions & 6 Tips to Help You Stick to Your Resolutions cont’d 

 

 

  • Work on your limiting beliefs. Think about why you haven’t been successful before. Many times, my clients know what the issue is yet they don’t know how to stop or change. If you want to change your beliefs you need to first know what they are. Often, I hear this, “I am not good enough” or “I am a failure.” A great tool is to question your beliefs and ask yourself if they are still serving you. If not it’s time to create new ones as many were formed before age 7 when we were young children and didn’t know any better.
  • Believe in yourself and never give up even when you have an off day. Create visual representations that you can see daily such as a vision board. A vision board has been my friend and over the years I have had several of them. I’m a firm believer in using them because they are powerful! My vision boards even helped me find my soulmate as well as enabling me to create a vision for my life. It’s getting closer to my dream every day. Persistence and determination go a long way.

GRATITUDE IS THE BEGINNING OF A BLISSFUL LIFE

Are you stressed out or are you feeling stuck? So start being grateful! Being gratitude is mostly at the forefront of people’s minds with Thanksgiving. However if we start our day with gratitude on a daily basis, even in the midst of challenges, our life will start to change in a more positive direction.

I must admit that I have not always felt this way. You see I used to be upset with events and people when things did not go as I had planned. Things started to change when I started to apply the teachings of the Law of Attraction and observing my thoughts and guiding them.  Sometimes we get angry with the world or God (as we may perceive it), but this is exactly the time when we need to apply the Law of Gratitude. There might be lessons to be learned that we might not be aware of.

In the past I did a program called “The Science of Being Rich” by Nancy Matthews. A co-founder of Women’s Prosperity Network in Plantation, Fl. The program is based on the teachings of Wallace D. Wattles. Prior to that, I had also studied Harv Eker’s the Secrets of the Millionaire Mindset. Whatever book or program you decide to follow, the key is to be disciplined and consistent. Years of conditioning will not change overnight. It requires patience, faith, and willingness to change your outdated belief patterns.

Goodwill and Gratitude

You may even face resistance from your loved ones and people that are close to you! As the saying goes “misery loves company.” But so does goodwill and gratitude. Whenever possible, surround yourself with people who have a positive outlook on life. Don’t waste time by complaining, blaming others and playing a victim.

In his book, Wallace states that “the more gratefully we fix our minds on the supreme good, when things come to us, the more good we will receive, and the more rapidly they will come.“ Grateful mind brings us closer to the Creator, God, Life Force, Higher Power or however you want to call it, from which the blessings come.

He further states that it is absolutely necessary to follow the Law of Gratitude in order to achieve the results we are seeking. Whether this is financial prosperity, health, relationships or buying a new home.

Changing your thoughts in order to change your emotions

When I work with clients, they often become angry, depressed, and anxious, as well as hopeless about their life, not knowing how to change things. The first thing I tell them is to start focusing and observing their language and their thoughts. Then to start changing their thoughts in order to change their emotions.

I believe that we are all the creators of our life. By choosing our thoughts and being grateful for everything in our life (yes even tough lessons and pain) we will create a life that we have always wanted. Wallace also adds that “without gratitude you cannot long keep from dissatisfied thoughts regarding things as they are. The moment you PERMIT your mind to dwell with dissatisfaction upon things as they are, you begin to lose ground.”  The grateful mind is constantly fixed upon the best.

In addition, FAITH is born of gratitude. We need to have faith in ourselves that we can overcome our “Conditioned Self”. Primarily this is based on fear, worry and negativity. This is the time to perform a daily action of thinking about what we are grateful for. It could be as simple as being grateful for a nice sunny day (and we are very lucky here in South Fl when the rest of the country has winter storms and cold).

I suggest to my clients to keep a daily gratitude and intention journal. Writing things down can make a huge difference. We want to live in our “Authentic Self” which is based on love, gratitude, joy and faith.

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & 5 tips for treatment

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD? It’s Veterans Day 2018. In recent years so many war veterans have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition there is now an above average rate of incidents of shootings. Specifically there was even a recent event close to my home, in Parkland, Fl. That and other things made me decide to write this article. Mainly I wrote this so that it will hopefully help to bring some clarity as to what PTSD is and some suggestions as to how it can be treated.

Correct treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder 

 

Unfortunately there is no one correct treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. However I based this on my personal experience. Having suffered significant trauma which was a result of all types of abuse during my childhood and adolescence. As well as experiencing trauma related to being in abusive relationships later on in my adult life. I have experienced nightmares and some flashbacks for as long as I remember. This just serves as a guideline. Therefore I strongly recommend that if you feel that you suffer from PTSD that you consult a licensed clinician or a psychologist.

How the psychology field defines Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

 

In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association revised the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnostic criteria. This is in the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; 1). Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is included in a new category in DSM-5, Trauma, and Stressor-Related Disorders. Full copyrighted criteria are available from the American Psychiatric Association. Here I just list a few.

 

Criteria to be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

 

What does it take to be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? The person would have had to have been previously exposed a number of things. Death, threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violence, or similar. This is including any kind of abuse or domestic violence, experiencing it directly or indirectly by observing it.

 

Typical symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

 

Typical symptoms include: nightmares, flashbacks, emotional distress, and intrusive thoughts.

For example, for years following the abuse, I would have continued nightmares. Inaddition I also developed sensitivity to criticism and aversion to anybody talking loudly. I would experience physical sensations, such as vomiting or upset stomach. Basically, I developed a trigger – in this case, a loud voice.

Additional Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms

 

Another example is in the case of people that were exposed to violence. This includes shooting and guns. They develop emotional distress with ANY loud noises that resemble a gun shot. It can take years to heal and not to experience emotional distress when the trigger presents itself.

For a person to meet the criteria for PTSD, the symptoms need to last at least a month. They also experience distress and functional impairment in several key areas of life such as social and occupational

So what can we do about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

 

Most of all you should know that you are not alone. What helped me most is to seek support of friends. They normalized my feelings and helped me to see that what I was experiencing was not the norm. My boyfriend’s family was nothing like my own. Fortunately I experienced joy and laughter, and not abuse and tension, which was the norm in my family when I was an adolescent.

 

I also worked with several therapists, coaches, and healers. By now I had learned how to identify my triggers and how to manage my emotions and “rewrite my story”. One approach that was helpful was EMDR. Helping me with a pervasive memory of being severely beaten. The fortunate thing was finding a therapist that was trained in EMDR. After a few sessions I was able to tell my story without crying and was able to emotionally detach from the incident.

 

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

 

However, there was an approach that finally started to help me. This is in terms of stopping intrusive and limiting thoughts and beliefs. This occured when I learned and received training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). In essence, this approach focuses on the linguistic and how we store and process memories.

 

Negative Programming  as it relates to Trauma & Abuse

 

I have been able to start understanding that my negative programming was due to being exposed to abuse and trauma that colored my world. Largely I saw the world as a threat and subconsciously sought experiences and people that confirmed that the world is not a safe place and that people cannot be trusted. Only when I started changing my beliefs did my life and my well-being improve.

 

Join a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Support Group

 

Join a support group. Other people who have gone through similar experiences can not only offer validation, you will also feel understood. Not many people (including some therapists) really understood why I am not able to get better. This is in spite of years of therapy and medication. Medication can be helpful in the initial stages. But the key is to understand the root causes and how your beliefs and thoughts contribute to the disorder.

 

Keep journaling. When we are overwhelmed with thoughts keep journaling! It’s key that we find healthy ways to manage our thoughts and get them out of our head.

 

Learn stress management and breathing techniques. I think meditation literally saved my life. Previously I studied different modalities including mindfulness, zen, guided meditation, and meditation based on mantra (the Art of Living Foundation). Finally I was able to heal insomnia and significantly reduced anxiety and depression symptoms.
