“Strategies For Toxic People” exist but do YOU have them? Many of us have experienced working at toxic workplaces or having to deal with toxic people. But do you have the tools you need to blossom and flourish? Perhaps you’re dealing with this very issue right now!

 

Often times this also includes our closest family members! While it’s easier to disconnect and minimize contact with a relative or stranger, it’s much more difficult when the toxic person is your boss or your partner or a family member.

However, please don’t despair. There are some strategies that work to minimize emotional upset caused by having to deal with toxic people on a daily basis.

Strategies For Toxic People- Family Members

 

Throughout my career and personal life I have had to deal with toxic people. This started with my own family, and especially my mom. She was verbally, physically, and emotionally abusive. When you’re a child and this occurs you feel powerless. Your life depends on your parents, and therefore, many times you are not able to express your true feelings, such as anger.

 

Instead, one develops defense mechanisms just to survive. My way of surviving a toxic upbringing was to spend many hours in my room. I spent that time journaling, listening to music, spending time with my friends, and dating a lot. This was because I never felt loved or secure for that matter.

 

This also made me fearful of those in authority and consequently, I became a “people pleaser”. This was out of fear of being rejected. I was put up with abusive bosses out of fear of losing a job. As a result I developed chronic anxiety and gastrointestinal issues.

Strategies For Toxic People- At work

 

The final wake-up call was in the Fall of 2012. My wake up call was after a scary episode of being diagnosed with acute gastritis. This was after working at yet another toxic workplace. So I decided it was time for a change. Now I began to work for myself full time. It felt like jumping from a plane without a parachute. You may understand what that feels like! Yes I had no savings or a plan, but I just knew I would get seriously ill if I didn’t take care of myself.

 

Luckily my fiance (now my husband) was there for me to make this important decision. He continues to support me. The journey towards self-love and assertiveness was long. It was often painful at times, but it was well worth it. Today, I’m able to share this with my clients and help them create healthier boundaries with others.

Recently, I came across a powerful article on this topic in Psychology Today titled, Poison People,” by Katherine Schreiber. She discusses four major strategies to handle toxic people I have included below.

 

Four Strategies For Toxic People

 

Control Your Exposure

 

If nothing else, try to minimize your contact. Limit the time you spend together if it’s a family member. Maybe even schedule an event so that you don’t have to overstay. If the person is your boss, only spend time as needed. If you can, ask to be transferred to a different department.

 

Manage Your Reactivity

 

We cannot change others, however, we can change how we react. Learn meditation and stress relief techniques. Excuse yourself and go to the bathroom to do some deep breathing. You may need to tell the person you will be happy to talk to them when they are calmer.

 

Don’t Explain

 

There is no use in trying to explain yourself as the other person is the one who is refusing to listen. Simply say that you are busy at the moment, without explanation.

 

Immunize Yourself

 

Get to know people first before making any major decisions. In addition pay attention to non-verbal cues and body language because it is vital. The goal at work is to get away from toxic people. But in our personal lives, we are more prone perhaps to invite them in. This is because many times they have appealing traits such as confidence and charm.

We need to be mindful when we start blaming ourselves at times. We can’t continue making excuses for toxic people. It’s key to set healthy boundaries right from the beginning. We deserve to be treated with respect. Sometimes that may even mean leaving a toxic job or relationship.

What is “Holistic”?

This Blog is titled “Holistic Psychotherapist Defined”. So just what does it mean when we say “Holistic”? How do we define the term “Holistic” as it relates to the medical field? Nowadays, many practitioners, including myself, define themselves as “holistic”. But there seems to be some confusion and lack of understanding as to what this term actually means. You might agree with me this is pretty fuzzy.

 

According to Wikipedia, “The holistic concept in medical practice, which is distinct from the concept in the alternative medicine, upholds that all aspects of people’s needs including psychological, physical and social should be taken into account and seen as a whole. A 2007 study said the concept was alive and well in general medicine in Sweden. This is great news!

Some practitioners of holistic medicine use alternative medicine exclusively. Although sometimes holistic treatment can simply mean that a physician takes into account of all of a person’s circumstances in giving treatment. Sometimes when alternative medicine is mixed with mainstream medicine the result is called “holistic” medicine. Though this is more commonly termed integrative medicine.

 

So to know definitively you really have to take time to slow down and ask questions to clarify. For instance, according to the American Holistic Medical Association, it is believed that the spiritual element should also be taken into account when assessing a person’s overall well-being.[4]”

I’ve been interested in alternative and holistic medicine for the last 15 years. Consequently I’ve also adopted spiritual practices in my personal life. Largely the reason this happened is fascinating and very common. This occurred when I was getting my Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Simultaneously, I was also dealing with some personal challenges in my life.

Fortunately I started meditating and learning about alternative approaches and techniques. I also received training in clinical hypnosis and guided meditation. This lead me to conclude that I was achieving great success with my clients. They suffered from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and trauma. Additionally I studied Zen and other forms of meditation. Then I started teaching my clients simple breathing techniques with great success.

 

At the same span of time I was also struggling from depression and anxiety. Which I’ve experienced all my life. It’s partially genetic and partially due to abuse and trauma I suffered ever since I was 15 years old.  This abuse last until I was almost 25 years old.

This abuse and trauma also occurred in my intimate relationships with men. Traditional therapy, even though helpful, has its limitations. I’m happy to report that I finally had a break-through. This was after I started using alternative approaches in addition to seeing a psychotherapist. We can talk more about that later.

 

Frankly, I’m determined to find ways to help myself and my clients without the need to rely on medication. Medication can be life saving in some instances, such as in the case of bi-polar disorder or during the initial course of treatment.

 

However often times clients are given prescriptions by their primary care physicians who don’t have in-depth knowledge about psychiatric disorders. As a result there are always some type of side effects. This might include for example having trouble reaching an orgasm! So there is much to consider.

Holistic Psychotherapist Defined- Overview

 

You see I always encourage my clients to get properly evaluated by a psychiatrist. It is also recommended that clients see a psychotherapist such as licensed marriage and family therapist such as myself. As well as a licensed mental health counselor or a licensed clinical social worker. Of course the downside for taking medication is it just alleviates the symptoms. But it doesn’t deal with the root causes of depression or anxiety.

 

My company, Holistic Coaching International as well as my website www.NaturalStressManagement.com was created to help! As an example you can access my “Stress to Bliss” Guide which focuses on the whole person. This is in terms of mind, body, emotion and spirit for identifying both issues and solutions naturally.

Research shows that many chronic medical illnesses, such as diabetes, and high blood pressure are linked to experiencing chronic stress. Which often times is found to be a result of lacking the necessary coping skills.

 

In addiition it is being unaware that your health is more than just your physical health. In other words, it is not enough just to have regular check-ups and take the necessary supplements. It is just as equally important to have emotional and mental health. Including having the tools and coping skills to deal with life’s stresses in the environment.

 

When I work with clients, we explore the root causes for anxiety and depression. We do this by utilizing traditional psychotherapy. As an example, this might be exploring their family-of-origin dynamics. Alternatively, it might be exploring their belief system and their values as well.

 

We also discuss their lifestyle. Recommendations are completed based on their individual experiences and symptoms. Sometimes we discuss alternative approaches, such as going to a yoga class. We might also discuss getting a massage or going to a meditation class.

I utilize several alternative and complimentary medicine approaches in my work with clients. This includes, for example, clinical hypnosis and guided meditation. I also collaborate with other holistic practitioners. This might be, as an example, fitness experts, health coaches and massage therapists. Did you know that stress and anxiety are one of the leading causes for seeking professional help? More specifically, more than 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety and 20 million suffer from depression. Social media and the internet have enabled us more efficiency seeking help. Unfortunately, it has also created more possibility for sub-par professionals. Frankly, these are people who are not properly trained to offer services. They often offer advise that can be misleading and do more damage than good.

 

Maybe you’ve heard about the “Hippocratic Oath“? The key to everything is not to do harm. The “Hippocratic Oath” is an oath historically taken by physicians. It is one of the most widely known of Greek medical texts. In its original form, it requires a new physician to swear an oath. An oath to/by a number of healing gods, to uphold specific ethical standards.

Specific Medical Professionals Defined

 

There are certain specific Professionals that are properly trained to help clients with mental and emotional illnesses or disorders. They are Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Counselors, Licensed Social Workers, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. In addition Licensed Mental Health Counselors and several others mental health professionals, such as Psychiatric Nurses

 

But this is definitely NOT something for life coaches! Including “Certified” Life Coaches. They might be able to help clients with “life challenges”. Those that require setting goals, or improving skills. This might be for example changing a career, or finding a romantic partner. But there are limitations. Frankly most are not even aware of them and render services out of a drive to make a quick buck.

As in any other field, there are “good and bad” therapists. There are “good and bad” life coaches. I do know some good life coaches who have ethics and understand limitations. However, more often than not, I’m coming across unqualified and unethical life coaches. Thus far that has been my experience of living in S Fla for over 20 years. Also having been a therapist now over 15 of those years.

 

Years ago I wrote and clarified distinctions between each in my previous article. It was entitled “The Difference Between a Psychologist, Psychotherapist and a Psychiatrist Demistified” June 2014.

There is a problem that exists in my opinion. That is the coaching field is not upheld to any high rigorous ethical and legal considerations. Not as it is in the case of licensed mental health professionals. The only regulating body is the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Therefore the coaching schools that are following their standards, are more likely to offer quality programs. But unfortunately it’s still not a guarantee. That’s why ethics and moral obligations to refer clients out when you’re NOT qualified is the key here.

Once to my horror I observed a “healer/life coach’ proudly describe how they treated a client, who was suicidal! First of all, all clients who enter mental health treatment with a licensed clinician, are guaranteed privacy. This includes social media! This also means being HIPPA compliant! So this was already the first violation. Not to mention the fact that this person didn’t have any training whatsoever! That is key in cases like this.

 

Over the years I have had several incidents with life coaches and their specific approach. I actually attended 6 months of intense training by a coaching school. This school is accredited by the International Coaching Federation. This is in addition to graduate school and other training over the years.

I came across one such poorly run life coaching programs locally here in S Fla. I actually read on their website that the founder had a criminal and drug history. The website was not created very well by the way! Over the last 30 years of being in education and the psychology field I have studied many self-help authors. I do believe that people who had to deal with adverse life situations can be one of the best teachers!

 

Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer & Donna Eden

 

There are several people that come to mind. For example Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer, Donna Eden and more just to name a few. These are folks that come to my mind when you talk about overcoming enormous adversity. Then in turn sharing that gift with others.

 

However they were also very humble people! Moreover their first priority was not sales but rather SHARING what they had learned with others. They also didn’t cross boundaries when it came to others’ mental health.

I cannot say that ALL the trainers from this particular program are like the three trainers I had met personally. But this happened in the span of over 10 years. It seemed to me like theirs is a general approach. Their obvious lack of knowledge how to approach clients remains just the same.

 

That is also why I can only go by what I had personally experienced. I might have even taken their workshop if I wasn’t so turned off by several things. First their lack of proper interpersonal, communication as well as sales skills. This is in addition to what I saw as a complete lack of knowledge of basics of human development & psychology. This is something that has happened years ago but it really stands out in my memory.

I came across another life coach and I’ll share that experience too. This happened when I was part of a coaching/self-growth program back in 2004. This was at one of the networking meetings when I had just graduated. However I was immediately turned off by her aggressive sales pitch. In graduate school the first thing we learn is UNCONDITIONAL POSITIVE REGARD for a client.

 

This means you need to work with people where they are. This person tried to convince me that I desperately needed the help of this particular program. Of course she happening to be selling it too right at the moment. But I needed to buy it because my life is “such a mess”! She said that “I will not be successful” because my “strategy” was no good. Amazingly she went on to say I had created my own trauma. Basically everything negative that happened in my life was my fault.

This happened on two more occasions over the years with two different coaches from this particular program. Of course the last encounter I just told the person I had no interest. My only intention to meet with her was socially. I had expressed lack of interest due to my previous experiences with two other coaches from this program. Unfortunately, she even persisted and tried to put me down and shame me as well!

 

Frankly, the worst thing was that I was in a car accident almost around that time in my life. Unfortunately, I was a victim of road rage. However, she persisted in telling me “I created and attracted this”. When you examine this it tends to sound more like New Age philosophy.

I do believe that mindset is key. Any properly trained clinician knows that shaming and putting people down is the last thing you want to do. Especially when you say you want to help that person. This kind of approach could break a person who is struggling. Perhaps because of their exposure for example to previous harshness and criticism.

 

Here is the bottom line. Even if the program works for some people, their sales pitch clearly shows to me that there is no depth. People who sell this program in most cases have no proper training or credentials. At least the ones I have come across. Specifically this person only took this course 6 years ago. Prior to this she was in a service industry before and now calls herself a “Master Trainer.”

Why do I say that? It seemed like it came with a sense of entitlement. I’m very intuitive and sense people’s energy very quickly. In the past I just didn’t trust myself enough with this “gut feeling” or “intuition”. However in most cases my gut is right!  

 

I have always been an open minded person and worked all my life. Honestly I’ve worked at least for 30 years on healing my own trauma. I’ve earned a Master’s Degree from the highly reputable University of Miami in Coral Gables Fl. I graduated with Honors! So understand this is not the only case I have come across.

I had a similar experience with another self-growth program, that will remain nameless! The short version is even though I gained some skills. The way they go about with their sales totally turned me off from further exploring it. They call it enrolling people!

 

How can you be ethical when you are desperate to make money? Ethically speaking don’t you need to really understand if this person is a match?  Or is just about you and the particular program you happen to be selling?

So my concern is therefore two fold. First most of these Life Coaches have no proper training in human psychology and understanding. They can cause serious damage in cases where people have experienced significant life trauma or have underlying mental illness. This occurs by making them “wrong”, coercing them and using aggressive tactics.

 

Fortunately I have worked on raising my self esteem which used to be very low. Consequently, many people that are struggling with mental health disorders also have a difficult time asserting themselves. Especially if they were abused, because of the potential for this low self esteem, predators can and do take advantage!

 

This taking “advantage” of their clients innocence and desperation and willingness to try anything to feel better is awful! They do not have proper training. They also are not able to distinguish who is the right candidate for their program. Think about that. It has the potential to make this a really terrible situation.

Another issue is also the high cost of these programs or coaching sessions. Recently my client told me that his friend is a life coach. His friend offered him and a friend a family discount rate for a coaching session. This discounted rate was $500/hr! Which of course is absurd! Please be observant and do your research!

Here are some basic questions that might help you when you’re deciding between a licensed clinician/psychotherapist or a life coach.

 

1. Where did you get your training and what are your credentials? Is your school accredited?

 

2. How much experience do you have with this particular issue that I am struggling with?

 

3. Does this issue/disorder that I’m struggling with fall under mental health and therefore needs to be properly diagnosed? More specifically does it instead relate more to certain goals I want to accomplish in life? For example this might be about getting fit, losing weight, changing career or finding a life partner.

4. Is this person really listening to me? Will they help me even if it means he or she needs to refer me out to a licensed clinician? Unfortunately, is this just another person simply trying to “close the sale”. A person really not interested in my well being?

Today I wanted to share with you something that I’ve been struggling with all my life. The good news is I had a breakthrough after talking to a wise friend. For years I’ve worked with therapists, healers and coaches to release trauma from the past and my “victim” role.

 

You see a wise friend told me how to get more into depth. He told me to start taking full responsibility for my feelings, thoughts, behaviors and actions. Also to take full responsibility as well for my choices and who I let into my inner space.

 

The “Conditioned Self”

 

I’m excited to be able to finally meet my real “Authentic Self”. One that is based on pure love, compassion, joy and peace. This is as opposed to relying on projections and roles from my “Conditioned Self”. (As described by my mentor Shelley Riutta) that is based on guilt, anger, fear and other negative emotions. Now you might say this is all good and well but these things actually happened. The thing is that we see everything based on our past experiences with other people, events and circumstances. If we didn’t have an emotional attachment to a person or event that happened in our past, we wouldn’t have such a strong emotional reaction. That reaction acts as a “trigger” to a current situation. This means that we have not fully healed the situation. This also includes our emotional response to it.

 

This is the basis of my work whether I work with couples or individuals. One of my approaches to healing is using Imago (to read about Imago check out my website). If we didn’t have attachment to the past we would not feel pain, anger, rejection or whatever we are feeling.

The Imago Theory

 

I want to discuss Imago Theory in more detail. Lets say for example, if a woman was abused in her childhood or past romantic relationships. If she hasn’t healed the past event and emotional attachment to it, she will unconsciously repeat the same scenario. She will do this in not just intimate relationships but also platonic relationships. This is whether business or personal. More importantly she will continue carrying this pattern onto her children or any future relationships. 

 

Depression Therapy

In addition, if she is in a relationship with a man, who had similar patterns of being a”victim” of the situation, they will keep “triggering” each other’s wounds. They will continue this pattern until they both take full responsibility for their thoughts, beliefs, actions, and choices.

Remember, no matter what, you always have a choice. Even women or men that are abused in a relationships still have a choice which is not easy, but they CAN leave the relationship and many times a professional is needed to help them build back their self-esteem and self-love to be able to make that step. Finances might get in the way, and most people prefer to remain in the comfort zone instead of being vulnerable and looking deeply into themselves.

You might be a stay at home mom or dad or a professional or business owner, the issue remains the same. We all want love, understanding, and a shoulder to cry on. We have all read enough self help books, or even spent years in therapy, yet we are not getting the results.  And this goes for both men and women alike. Nowadays it’s not uncommon anymore for a woman to have a demanding career, while her husband stays home or works in a less demanding job. What I’m saying here is true for both genders.

Men usually just don’t share their suffering or even abuse from a spouse due to the stigma attached to it. This is a very difficult situation in terms of healing and moving forward. The fact that men are usually very closed off generally speaking works against the situation many times.



 

I have had my own share of failed relationships that stemmed from my own traumatic and dysfunctional childhood. I started dating when I was 15 because I thought this was the only way for me to feel loved and understood. Yet, because I never healed sufficiently, I kept attracting abusive, angry, and narcissistic men. I wonder if this rings a bell for you.

Many of the clients I’ve worked with in my clinical practice have had similar struggles in relationships that have also led to clinical depression, anxiety and lack of self worth. There is a pressure within our society to find that one special man or woman who is your soulmate, otherwise you might be perceived that there is something wrong with you.

Probably like most of you, I’ve read a ton of self-help books, including Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and saw healers, coaches and therapists. I’ve learned a lot about myself and relationships which also led me to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

In my professional practice I utilize something called the Imago Approach, a concept founded by Harville and Helen Hendrix.



 

According to this theory, we attract partners in our life that remind us about our primary caregivers, who are generally our parents, and that includes both for their positive and negative traits. To give you an example, a woman who grew up in a home where her mother was very submissive, might find herself attracting domineering and controlling men like her father.

Troubled Relationships- Your Subconscious



 

However, don’t despair because with some professional help this CAN be overcome. The best approach that worked for me and my clients is to understand how your subconscious and unconscious mind works. Many times, when we grew up in a dysfunctional home, we made certain beliefs about love, relationships, feelings, money and so on. We might not even remember these beliefs yet we keep living our lives based on those beliefs.

If we want a different life, the key is to understand your mindset and your beliefs. Many times you’ll find you’re still living your life based on your parents or other authority figures beliefs. As children, we depended on others for our survival and our well being so we were not able to question those beliefs, consequently as ADULTS we can, and we MUST in order to change our lives for the better.



 

Over time I’ve found the techniques that work best in uncovering hidden beliefs include NLP, hypnosis, and EMDR.



 

 

The Toxic Partner



 

Now, let’s talk some more about “How do you know if you are in an unhealthy relationship or even a toxic relationship.” further. I want you to ask yourself if any of these statements apply to you. By the way, an excellent book I often refer to is by Doreen Virtue. Some of these behaviors are more call for an improvement, while others could be too toxic and you might need to leave the relationship.

Relationship Deal Breakers



 

It’s important to know what your “Deal Breakers” are and what you can tolerate. However there are some that deserve our attention. In this list I’m just mentioning a few of the more common ones. These “Deal Breakers” can destroy even a happy relationship.



 

  • 1. Interrupting – the person who continuously interrupts you is not interested in what you have to say. Very often, the person who constantly interrupts is frequently anxious or hyperactive (and that might be due to use of stimulants, such as coffee). You need to tell them something like: “Excuse me, I am not done talking yet” and be assertive.

 

  • 2. Constant correcting – this is even worse than interrupting. You constantly walk on eggshells. You need to be assertive and tell them that it feels more  like he or she is acting as your teacher and not your partner.

 

  • 3. Clingy/needy behavior. Again you need to tell them you are busy with projects and set proper boundaries.

 

  • 4. Stalking is even worse and in some cases you might need to get a restraining order if situation doesn’t improve.

 

  • 5. Guilt-tripping or manipulating people. You feel resentful and angry. It’s important to say NO and stick to it.

  • 6. Angerholics are addicted to being angry. This anger might be a result of upbringing, or also deep feelings of inferiority, disguised as anger. It’s important to get a professional help especially if the angry person continues to be in denial and doesn’t respond to common sense.

 

  • 7. Controlling behavior where typically controlling people act out immaturely or with anger when they feel that they are not in control.

 

  • 8. Addictions, including substance abuse reminds us it’s important to understand that any addiction needs to be treated by a professional. If you find yourself always pleading with the person suffering from addiction, most of the time it will not help as you continue enabling their behavior. It takes a lot of strength and courage to stay in a relationship with an addict. Until they get professional help, you are really in a relationship with a man or a woman who is hidden behind this cycle of addiction.

Relationship Deal Breakers (conclusion)



 

  • 9. Name calling is behavior that is verbally abusive. When it occurs you need to speak up because it’s not acceptable. Name calling can hurt even more sometimes than physical abuse can especially for someone who has a trusting, sensitive heart. For example a Highly Sensitive Person.

 

  • 10. Betrayal A betrayer breaks your heart and your trust by engaging in hurtful behaviors such as infidelity, flirting with others, lying to you or exercising extremely poor judgement. In my professional practice I worked with many couples who had suffered infidelity and in some cases, if the relationship had a solid basis, they overcame infidelity issues. However it can takes years. It is always important to love yourself enough and be honest with yourself and not trying to forgive people at every cost.

I also wanted to share with you what Dr John Gottman calls “The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. These are 4 main behavior patterns that can destroy a relationship or a marriage (see Dr John Gottman “The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse” Blog)



 

Criticism: A complaint focuses on a specific behavior, while a criticism attacks the character of the person.



 

Defensiveness: Defensiveness is defined as self-protection in the form of righteous indignation or innocent victim hood in attempt to ward off a perceived attack. Many people become defensive when they are being criticized, but the problem is that being defensive never helps to solve the problem at hand. Defensiveness is really a way of blaming your partner.



 

Contempt: Statements that come from a relative position of superiority. Some examples of displays of contempt include when a person uses sarcasm, cynicism, name-calling, eye rolling, sneering, mockery, and hostile humor. Contempt is the greatest predictor of divorce and must be eliminated.



 

Stonewalling: Stonewalling occurs when the listener withdraws from the interaction. The antidote is to practice physiological self-soothing. The first step of physiological self-soothing is to stop the conflict discussion. If you keep going, you’ll find yourself exploding at your partner or imploding (stonewalling), neither of which will get you anywhere.

Now that we talked about dysfunctional and unhealthy relationship patterns, let’s talk for a minute about key characteristics of a HEALTHY relationship. I like to say, that in a healthy relationship, there is INTER-DEPENDENCE as opposed to co-dependence. Both partners are equal in every aspect and focus on their strengths and work together as a team.

 James Greenblatt, MD, a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, has been successfully treating patients with nutritional and metabolic therapies for more than twenty-five years. In this book, he provides a personalized model of integrative medicine for mental health that can result in relief from depression and a renewed sense of emotional health.

Natural Remedies Sleep Supplements- Samples

 

All dosages are estimates as everyone is different.

 

1. Magnesium (“anti stress mineral”) 200-300 mg before bedtime.

 

2. Valerian (reduces anxiety while improving sleep) 300-500 mg before sleep. Possible side effects are headache, restlessness, sleeplessness and irregular heartbeat.

 

3. Inositol & 5-HTP Inositol is naturally produced by intestinal bacteria and helps transmit nerve signals and prevents buildup of fat in the liver. Research supports positive benefits for insomnia and OCD. Dosage 1 teaspoon at 8 pm (about 2.8 grams) and 1 teaspoon before bed.

 

5-HTP is an early form of the neurotransmitter serotonin that is changed to make melatonin. Dosage 50-200 mg 30-60 minutes before bed. DO NOT take if already taking anti-depressants such as Lexapro.

4. Glycine Amino acid produced in the body and is considered an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It calms neurotransmitters so that they don’t fire rapidly. Dosage 3 grams 1 hour before bedtime.

 

5. GABA A neurotransmitter that helps brain cells calm down and become less excited.  Dosage 500-750 mg with a cup of water and drink half before bedtime. If you wake up during the night, drink the other half. Try 100-250 mg first and then increase the dosage.

 

6. Melotonin  A Hormone produced by the pineal gland that works with body’s built-in clock to regulate sleep and wake cycles. Your body needs mineral zinc to manufacture melotonin as well as Zinc plays a role in preventing depression.

 

Dosage: 1-3 mg before sleep.

 

Possible side effects are drowsiness, upset stomach and headaches.

Dr. Maya Sarkisyan’s sleep tips

 

Recently I attended a lecture by Dr. Maya Sarkisyan who also happens to be my functional medicine doctor. Here are a few more great tips from her for better sleep too. It’s important to note that “one size does not fit all.” It’s key to find the root cause for insomnia or poor sleep. Most often it’s stress, anxiety, and obsessive thinking. However it can also be hormonal changes during the menopause (as in my case) or even mold & allergies.

  • Move electronics out of your bedroom. Shut down all the screens. Blue light is very stressful for your nervous system. Make sure you have filters or software on your electronic devices to get rid of blue light. Put your phone on airplane mode, and turn it face down. 
  • Keep the temperature cooler during the night than through the day. The best sleep temperature is between 65 and 72 degrees.
  • At least two hours before bedtime stop eating anything and don’t drink alcohol. The best it to have your last bite before 7pm, and have only water or herbal tea after.

  • Clean up your environment. It is much better to sleep in a clean room knowing that in the morning you will wake up to an organized space.
  • Relax with a book (instead of TV)  or journal about the day and write down tasks for tomorrow
  • Get blackout curtains and block all the light sources you can. Get your bedroom as dark as possible. 
  • If you cannot fall asleep for 30 min – get up, go into another room, have dim lighting only and repeat some of your routines. After 15 minutes you can then go back to bed and try to fall asleep again. 
  • Take at least 10 minutes to practice mindful relaxation and/or spiritual practices. Usually, spiritual practices take longer. Examples – Prayer, Meditation, Breathing, Qigong. and practice gratitude.

Practicing some form of meditation, and spending time in nature, as well as daily exercise will make you feel better. It will also help you get more restful sleep. If you are unable to shake off intrusive thoughts, I also recommend journaling. If the problem persists, schedule time with a licensed clinician who will help you uncover other reasons for lack of sleep.

 

I recommend talking to a Naturopath or medical doctor especially if you are already taking medication as some of it may interfere. So in the end don’t forget natural remedies & sleep supplements. Wishing you a restful and peaceful night sleep!
